RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013

You guys wanna know where they should have a maze. Well before you say there's already pirates or they're gonna be working on it for 2014, it should be in the globe theater. There's a good sized front room and then there's a big old theatre room and if they really wanted to, make it go backstage through a back door, and make it come out by theskyride or the funnel cake shop. Just an idea tho

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013

I think you may have just invalidated your own suggestion. :p

Anyway, I imagine it hadn't been used previously because most people aren't going to come back to Banbury Cross halfway through the evening to experience a house.

The main issue I see with using the globe is the following reasons:

1) Renovation work in progress
2) All the seats would have to be removed, which is more than their probably willing to do
3) The floor is extremely uneven in the globe and is slanted, it would feel pretty weird and could be potential for tripping hazards
4) Not sure if there is enough space backstage? RPT has a large warehouse space for it's backstage making a house possible, the globe probably has individual actual rooms.
5) No Money in the budget

I went twice a week (sometimes all three days of the weekend) for the entire length of Howl-O-Scream. I witnessed the horrible start, and the evolution of the scare zones and hordes. By mid-October, I thought the hordes had their $h!t together and were pretty good. Clowns and zombies were the best. Werewolves were kinda meh. Now I don't know how much most of you go, but I think I got a pretty good perspective on this.

This is pretty much how HOS was in 2011 as well. The event started off real weak and gradually got better and better as the season wore on. Since that was the first HOS event I ever attended, I'm assuming HOS (and Halloween events in general) were always kinda like this.

Buying a ton of plants, that die after a couple of weeks, because of whatever reason is just going to waste more money than save it.

If a theme park that's themed to actual gardens can't keep a few plants alive for a few weeks, I have absolutely no faith in this park whatsoever.

And if they fail to make a decent greenhouse maze this year (assuming some sort of greenhouse themed maze is coming back), I'll flip a table over or something. It really can't be that hard to build a greenhouse themed maze and make it scary. All you need is a few hiding spots, good makeup, good actors, props to work with, and a few plants. I don't see where this whole "blow up the budget for a maze" is coming from when all you need is plants and props.
It was also to bright, making it darker would drastically improve it

So, I bet atleast one or two of you have been waiting for me to chime in... and basically this is all I have to say:

All hope is gone.

I have to admit, I was thinking the same thing... I just don't have the guts to say it!:p
Seriously though, we have heard that they are (were?) planning on making drastic changes to the scenery. The only problem is, are they still planning to do that? Remember though, we have had it worse before. Anybody remember 2008? All we got that year was one new maze(that only lasted one year), and no new scare zones. All I can say is: I don't want to repeat of that year. Even if we did have a repeat, Howl-O-Scream has come a long way since then, so this year should still be fine.
*Don't give up hope!*

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013

I was trying to point out what CastleOSullivan ended up explaining better. I wasn't concerned about the fact that they couldn't keep the plants alive. But it felt very miss matched, half the time they were trying to make the plants die, then try to keep them alive. It just didn't work.

The park should've invested in fake plants that looked dead instead of killing their own. Nothing a spot of paint on a few fake trees can't really fix.

Well when you have actors who aren't into it, confusing pathways that shouldn't be, lack-luster makeup, and a set-up that looks like the garden section of a Home Depot, it's really difficult to make it scary. you're right, it shouldn't be that hard to make it scary, but for them apparently it is.

I've said before that the maze itself was very hit-miss from the start. You had really good actors mixed with awful ones. Plus the cheap looking makeup/costumes and the lack of hiding spots/props to work with). I actually liked the setup (it is a greenhouse after all, so it's bound to look like some sort of garden section), but many of the scares weren't well executed. It definitely improved later in the season, but not on the level of Deadline, Bitten, or Catacombs.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013

Speaking of budgets, does anyone know when BGW/SeaWorld Parks or whatever sets their fiscal year budget? I got to thinking about it because the school systems I work in go from July 1 to June 30. On that new year, that is when the budget truly comes into the light, and it affects my department greatly. We never really know exactly what we are going to be able to do until then. So my question is, does something similar happen with Busch, and if so, is the budget situation not so dire as some have suggested? In other words, though there appears to be very little or no money at the moment, could all of that change when the new fiscal year starts (maybe in time for HOS)? Just a thought.

I don't know much of anything about BG/SeaWorld financial stuff or business fiscal years in general, so please be nice. :D

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013

I know that the Tampa and Williamsburg events are two separate things entirely, but I heard that the Dark side of the Gardens theme will not return in Tampa. However, I'm guessing the theme will probably still return here. Tampa is just ditching the theme, because they want to have another new icon this year.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013

Yea, Tampa typically change their theme every year to two years because they have to. In order to keep up with the competition. You have to have something new almost every year to draw the crowds in unless your name is Disney, then they just come automatically :p

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013

How expensive can it be to build a good haunted maze? Strobes are 8 bucks, fog is about $50 and darkness is absolutely free.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013

But what do you need props for if it's pitch black?

Why not find a spot to build a trail off into the woods, like you'd find at a haunted farm out in the country? There're bound to be plenty of spots where you could put something like that...you could even use the train to deliver people to the place and bring them back.

Bonus is that the woods provide their own atmosphere and I can't imagine it taking too much money to get something like that ready.

I don't know...just spitballing.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013

Ideally, a maze out in the woods would be awesome, however there are a lot of safety issues regarding tripping over roots, evacuations, and what not. I think the closest we're going to get at the park is the maze we had in Festhaus Park.

The reasons that the mazes need props is that it enhances the atmosphere a lot. Some are done very well (Dead Line) and some not so much (Root, 13). One of the reasons Root was so terrible was because it had the atmosphere of a Home Depot gardening center.
