RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013: Fear Has a Way of Spreading

The debate seems to be parents vs. non-parents. The problem is, some parents don't care and want to scare the crap out of their kids. Sometimes, it's a parent testing the limits of their child, I did that last year at Hunt Club. Parents seem to be able to handle kids better than non. The debate is not should or shouldn't kids be allowed in, the debate is who can be tolerant of others.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013: Fear Has a Way of Spreading

Imagine this scenario which has happened to me a few times, you wait an hour in line for a house (the event is for hours long so that's a huge chunk) When you get into the house, your next to a kid who was forced into the house by their parents. Either the child is kicking and screaming (I had impressive bruises on my back once because of those), or the parent is telling people not to scare them and become abusive to staff when they do their job. Either way, the house experience is ruined by the kids and an hour is wasted because people were inconsiderate of those who want to enjoy the fear. The park also does /nothing/ for those people. Not to mention that not everybody goes to the park a lot like us, imagine the people who drove four hours to come to the park.

Think of it like your riding a coaster and the ride is stopped because somebody decided to do something unsafe and a huge chunk of the time is wasted because somebody was a dick. I get that as a parent you want to give the world to your children, but due to the nature of the houses it's very easy to have an experience wasted.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013: Fear Has a Way of Spreading

Actually, as a parent, I want to teach my child to be a responsible member of society, which includes knowing what attractions are appropriate and which aren't.

I personally get sick of the Victorian notion of children as sweet, uncorrupted angels. And I get even more sick of parents who think that their children should be the center of everyone's universe.

We wouldn't be having this discussion, if people were more considerate of others.

Nic my main disagreement with you is that you constantly are missing the age reason. I agree, not all children are too scared, but at the same time a vast majority of younger children are more scared than adults. The younger you are the more likely you are to be scared. Not saying there aren't children who are more brave than adults, because there are I am saying it is more likely.

I'm not missing it; I just disagree with it. Additionally, I think that it shouldn't be the park's problem. I think that parents should know their own kids. And yes, I am perfectly aware of how much of a pipe dream that it.

Would I object to an age limit after dark? No. Do I think it is brilliant idea to have kid-focused areas? Yes.

I am just trying to make the case that in a reasonable universe, no one would be selfish or stupid enough to drag the terrified 5-year old through the haunted house, and that in theory this should be a self-regulating system. This is also why I like the rating systems. Do they need to be improved? Probably. But that is a different debate.

For the record, I did not bring my daughter anywhere near HOS, until I felt she was old enough, and I still was careful about what she could see. This is the first year that I am even considering letting her in all of the houses, and she is 12.

Responsible parents aren't taking 4 and 5 year olds into haunted houses, responsible parents. So you want to ruin it for those who are responsible that have children that can handle it. You can't blame the park. Do you blame an airline for babies being allowed? Many of these parents are selfish, in that they can't get a sitter, so they take the kid, because THEY want to go. I don't bring my kids because my wife wouldn't have as much fun, being worried about them(motherly instinct), and my joy is watching her get scared! I know my 2 older kids could handle it (anyone here who has met them can attest to that). You could always ask some behind you to step ahead so you dan't have to go through with the kids. I found this article, and it sums up why kids, tweens and teens enjoy being scared. http://tweenparenting.about.com/od/physicalemotionalgrowth/a/Why-Children-Like-Being-Scared.htm

Oh you mean it'll actually look like a garden, rather than a garden center?

Like it should have been done last year.

I'm still not sure I understand the underlying concept of Root. What on earth is scary about a garden? I mean I don't like bugs and snakes, but plants really aren't intrinsically threatening.

It reminds me of my colleagues side of the office.

Yeah. Been there; done that; didn't want the t-shirt. I recall wandering through and encountering about two lack-luster actors. I don't think they really liked Root either.

I will give it another shot this year, because I ma the eternal optimist. But honestly? Roses? Not scary. Possibly a little creepy with eyeballs in them, but really what isn't creepy with big, bulging eyeballs?

A) Haunted Houses are a tad bit different than planes, malls, ect. It's an optional entertainment event. I'm not against kids who might be nervous. I'm against patents who want the park to bend to their will because children are magic.

B) I do think the park should be more proactive with kids who cleanly should not be there. Kids who can't walk, kids who are crying in the house, and parents who ask for people not to scare kids should be escorted out immediately. At that point it is clearly a safely and quality control issue. Like I said, not all kids but the ones who are carousing trouble.

C) RoaE's theme is this: The Lady of the Garden has taken over the park's landscaping department. That's it.

See right there is perfect! Each person is different, especially with children and it should be up to the parents who dictate what is appropriate for them. With that said, you don't see every child in the neighborhood at Howl-o-Scream having a grand old time because they are typically and more likely to not be able to handle it.

Cody, my info is the same info as everyone elses, personal observations, general society outlooks, personal opinion, etc.

Irresponsible parents.

I prefer to give my kids a chance to experience things, that way they can make educated choices later in life. I in no way coddle them or expect others to bend to their will, because I don't bend to their will. I agree there are too many spoiled brats out there now, because of the lack of discipline in this country. Do they have hidden passageways for the park to remove unruly guests?

A. 100% agree. Although, I think your statement fits malls and planes too. Keep your child under control in public. Period.

B. Agree.

C. Y'all got that I was being snarky, right? I understood the concept. I just don't understand why anyone would go there. I don't think it works. Hopefully this year will prove me wrong. "Is that a tulip? Ahhhh!!!"

Seriously, my working theory is that someone thought "Root of all evil" was too clever to pass up and tried to find a way to match the phrase. I think the cart was definitely pushing the horse.
