Now that the season's finally over, I'll give my final thoughts on this year's HOS.

Mazes
Bitten: 5/5 - Done 5 times - I can definitely see why this maze keeps coming back year after year. The theming is good, the actors are always on point, and the scares are fantastic. I don't understand why everyone knocks this maze because it's consistently good.

Catacombs: 5/5 - Done 3 times - Another solid maze with some really good scares. The theming isn't as elaborate as Bitten's, but the great actors totally make up for it's shortcomings (a short maze with pretty minimal theming). Luckily it felt a bit longer this year than it did last year.

Deadline: 5/5 - Done 3 times - This maze was definitely improved from last year. They had some fantastic actors and the theming is top-notch (even better than Bitten's). The additional props, special effects, and scareactors really make this one of the most improved mazes from last year.

13: 3/5 - Done 2 times - I've addressed this a few times before, but this maze really needs a bit of tweaking done. The actors are pretty good and some of the rooms are really well-done, but the empty rooms, plus some of the odd scares (waiting room? seriously?) really bring the maze down. I remember it being better last year, but not by much.

Root of All Evil: 3/5 - Done 5 times - This started out as the weakest maze of the season, but underwent some major improvements as the season progressed. I still think some of the scares were really creative and well-done (Am I the only person that likes the water splashing? It's no different from getting spewed with toilet water in an abandoned subway), while others were a bit of a miss. If the park really wants to improve the maze, they should ditch the cheap makeup and come up with some more elaborate props/costumes.

Fear Fair: 1/5 - Done once - I unfortunately was only able to do this once this year, but this maze was pretty weak this year and last. I hear it's improved, but I was only really able to do this maze early in the season. Maybe next year I'll get to do this maze a few more times later in the season.

Roaming Hoards: 4/5 - Like the scare zones last year, the hoards started out pretty weak, but got stronger and stronger as the season progressed. I still think they need to add more people to the groups along with the scare zones sorta like last year's (at least change the makeup for the people in the zones so they don't look like the hoards. The bungee people were awesome though, especially the one in New France.

I guess I can't say much about the shows other than they were all amazing. BGW really pulled out all the stops this year for HOS shows.

Dig It Up: 5/5 - seen once - Like I said before, anything that combines Queen with Star Trek is a winner in my book. The actors are great and the show itself is a lot of fun to watch.

Night Beats: 5/5 - seen once - Fantastic music combined with fantastic acting all make for a great show.

Fiends: 5/5 - Probably the best show IMO. I think moving the show to Ireland was a great idea. It definitely made gave the show a little more of an "adult" feel that the old show didn't seem to have (and I guess that made it a bit more entertaining). I kinda miss Frankenstein though. Maybe they could make him part of the roaming hoards.

Overall, I'd have to put this year's event on par with last year's. The park still needs to tweak the event a bit (starting with closing the children's areas earlier for HOS prep), but I really enjoyed this year's event just as much as I did last year's.

I unfortunately missed out on KD's event though due to some unforeseen circumstances (I couldn't get a ride home), but there's always next year for that.

I am sure besides hurricane preparations, the fact that it was raining slightly could have done something as well. Although, to be completely honest the event seemed very dull Saturday. I think the event did not get a good as I wanted it to, but from the second weekend on, it was on par with last years event.

Technically they were calling it "Hallow Scream." Which, is what most of the GP seem to think Howl-O-Scream is anyways :\

Hate when people spell that incorrectly, but could FOX get in trouble for that? It's pronounced the same way, and it's pretty dern close to being spelled the same

OK, so as a newcomer to both BGWfans and BGW itself (first year going last year, went 20 times), I have lived in VA since 99 and always saw the "Jack" stuff for HOS, why the change last year?

Jack wasn't involved in 2011 either. I think he got fired! or the Lady of the Gardens killed him (praying mantis-style ;) )
And disposed of the body in the kitchen.

Jack is still very much a part of Howl-O-Scream.

Howl-O-Scream San Antonio still uses him if I recall correctly.

And the "scary" one too. ;)
I do think the new Jack is a good mascot for the kind of fall fun part of HOS, but looks extremely goofy next to the more intense parts of it.

I happened to be watching Americas Funniest Home Videos, and they did a section of scares. One of the videos was from HOS. It was near Pompeii, one of the clowns was sitting on a bench next to a girl. The girl did not know he was there, so he tapped her on the shoulder and scared her. It was really funny.

Since late March during an international pandemic is "reminisce about great Howl-O-Scream entertainment" time here at ParkFans, I wanted to bring up 2012 because I believe it will go down in BGW history as the last great Howl-O-Scream show year.

Just as 2009 blew people's minds with the sheer size of BGW's new house lineup—replacing every offering in a given product category for a special event is a huge deal—2012 brought that same level of churn to HOS' theatrical products. That said, whereas 2009's house lineup did have its weaker additions, BGW managed the unthinkable in 2012—the park legitimately made lightning strike thrice.

First up, in the Abbey Stone, following the failed attempt at a Fiends in the Festhaus reboot, BGW gave us an incredible, adult-oriented Rocky Horror-esque overhaul of the Fiends franchise. This all-new show featured an incredible cast, a strong storyline throughout, and even some great theatrical effects. This was my favorite iteration of a Fiends show at BGW or BGT and I legitimately believe it's likely the greatest we'll ever see.

Next up, we have an entirely new creation from Busch Gardens Williamsburg: Dig it Up. Though it ultimately didn't stay with us long and it will likely be remembered primarily for its incredibly expensive dinosaur skeleton, I honestly still believe the show was excellent. Despite it not being overty Howl-O-Scream, the family-friendly Night at the Museum rip-off theme actually sat shockingly well with me.

When I first heard talk of this show, my hopes were not high because, on paper, it seemed like a very odd choice. That said, in practice, it really worked for me. It had a clever cast of characters, some masterful musicians, and a really neat, fun, almost wacky feel that you often couldn't find in BGW's increasingly serious show lineup from that era. Dig it Up was a breath of fresh air and I hope it doesn't end up lost in HOS history.

And then, rounding out Howl-O-Scream 2012's legitimately awe-inspiring show lineup, BGW brought us another entirely new franchise: Night Beats. This is easily one of my favorite theme park shows of all time and I wholeheartedly believe it is one of the best shows BGW has ever produced. Though the show is just structured as a simple musical revue, nearly every number was brilliantly staged and choreographed through and through. From one of the strongest opening numbers I've ever witnessed at the park to the GORGEOUS owl number to the stunning costuming throughout, there's very little I would change. I haven't even mentioned Ulrich yet—the strongest male lead in any show I've ever seen at BGW by a long shot. There's so little not to love here.

I think Dig It Up was a victim of the "poor borrowing of creative license" known during this period. Being sued by Vangelis for using Chariots Of Fire without getting the rights. Probably easier to just shutter the show than the legal expense. Same situation as Rejoice, if I recall correctly.

I will never forget opening night of 2012. While the shows were great, the hordes were hyped up significantly and on my first visit, despite being in the park for over five hours I never once ran into them. I also remember waiting in a 90 minute line for the ORIGINIAL 1.0 Root of All Evil, that version honestly made Frostbite look like a house one would find at HHN.
