Got caught up in Talledega and forgot to look for them. I'll try to remember next week. Maybe I'll just draw it up myself. I know Bitten in and out.

Feel free to do both. :)

OK, we are fully into October now and there should be no more excuses for lameness at Howl-O-Scream. Opening weekend, I was not alone in thinking the event was overall a little pathetic. I was particularly apprehensive with some of the new entertainment. Now BG Howl-O-Scream seems to have hit its stride. Here is my list of thoughts on it:

HAUNTED HOUSES (ranked by my preference)
1. Fear Fest
• Hasn’t really changed all that much since opening day.
• Clowns! Clowns!! And more Clowns!!! Solid theme.
• Still suffers from being a partial open-air house (see at night).
• Still suffers from lack of actors (some empty rooms).
• Lines are usually short to non-existent.
• I cannot for the life of me fathom why so many people avoid Fear Fair. Scared of clowns? OK. You are here to be scared, right?

2. Catacombs
• Hasn’t really changed all that much since opening day (seems shorter than others).
• Very nice theme. Creepy skeletons everywhere (watch out above you).
• Lines are usually short to non-existent.

3. Deadline
• Hasn’t really changed all that much since opening day (solid theme).
• Watch out for the toilet & dripping mops (new?).
• Has a webcam for live viewing.
• Lines are usually short.

4. Root of All Evil
• Has improved a lot since opening day but still missing something (solid theme?).
• Still suffers from being an open-air house (see at night).
• Taking pictures at the beginning seems to slow the lines down.
• They added BUBBLES to one of the greenhouses!!
• Has a webcam for live viewing.
• Usually has a really long line.

5. Bitten
• Hasn’t really changed all that much since opening day (solid theme).
• Photo opportunity in the line better than ROAE (not sure if they are still doing it or not).
• Has two cute lady vampires dancing behind the drapes half way through.
• Lines are usually short.

6. 13
• Hasn’t really changed all that much since opening day (Lots of wasted space).
• The take on phobias still seems weak to me.
• One room smells really bad (hanging poo).
• The “Fear of Heights” room is really cool (watch out for backups).
• For some reason seems to always have the longer lines along with ROAE.

SHOWS (ranked by my preference)
1. Dig It Up
• Very entertaining. Lots of fun!
• Funny cave girl drummer.
• Big dinosaur on stage!!
• See at night to get the full effects of lights & fog.
• Seem to have worked out the inflatable Earth (it was getting stuck a lot in the box, but that provided its own laughs as UFO guy still does his thing).

2. Fiends
• Very dumb. Lots of fun!
• Creature from the “Back” Lagoon & Igor steal the show.
• Nurses!!
• Eye candy for the ladies.
• Continuing problems with Igor’s microphone popping.
• May not be family friendly for some.

3. Night Beats
• Has grown on me. Didn’t like it at all early on.
• Cheese. More cheese!!
• Disco segment & neon bee suits must go away!!
• Is in Das Festhaus with good eats!!

FRIGHTENING FEATURES (ranked by my preference)
1. Roaming Hordes
• Weak at first, now much improved.
• Clowns, Zombies & Werewolves! Oh my!!
• Work together for scares (particularly the clowns).
• Fun to watch!
• Needs more chainsaws.

2. Scare Zones
• Added later to fill the void in the park.
• Much improved.
• Pathway from Ireland to France is a lot of fun!
• Bungee wolves & ghosts very nice!

3. Open Casket
• Good-looking Vampires serve you overpriced adult beverages.
• Looks nice.

4. Inoculation Station
• Naughty nurses serve you overpriced adult beverages.
• Looks meh.
• Photo opportunity.

*I would like to add that this review is based on my experiences going on every Friday & Sunday night (and one Saturday) since opening weekend. I have seen the event evolve and am pleased with it.

Tonight was very crazy and capacity was reached as I predicted. I will say that the park is somewhat adequate at informing of capacity issues. I still think they can do more though. Yet, they do well enough as is. If you haven't already, I suggest reading comments on the posts ofBusch Gardens on Facebook. The people complaining the park needs to be open on week day, later, have pass holder days, etc. are just ridiculous and are making fools of themselves. They try to make sense when their logical is flawed.

Are you serious? BGW hits capacity literally every Saturday in October and I'm pretty sure it has been like that since HOS was conceived. There's NO reason passholders should be complaining about not being let into the park. The park already holds passholder days (one in Spring and one in Fall) and we all know nobody's gonna be in the park on a weekday (especially if the weather is as cruddy as it is now).

Out of curiosity, what is KD's capacity and how do they handle their Halloween event? I know this thread is for BGW's HOS but I want to compare the two and how each other stack up.

From what I've gathered from other Halloween events across the country, KD will be just as crowded as BGW. I'm not sure about park capacity (I think it's around 50K-70K. Don't take my word for it), but I do know KD will hit capacity on Saturdays while Fridays and Sundays will be manageable. It's pretty much like that for most theme parks during Halloween time.

In response to what else Busch Gardens can do to alert visitors about reaching capacity during Howl-O-Scream, I don't know. They do a good job with the tools they have. The problem is folks like me who don't use twitter or Facebook. This website is as connected as it gets for our household. We cannot use the internet while traveling unless my son finds somewhere with free wifi. Until our first visit two years ago it would not have occurred to us to check before we came.

We had no idea Howl-O-Scream had become so popular that the park reached capacity on Saturdays. Lucky for us we were in the park early for the coaster tour. My husband went out to the parking lot at 4:00 to get our jackets and almost didn't make it back in. Even more lucky was that BGW had given us the Unlimited Howl-O-Scream Quick Queue passes to make up for our problematic tour. That's how we learned not to come on a Saturday unless we're prepared to arrive when it opens, buy the Quick Queue pass and never leave till closing.

Our relatives in Virginia don't believe us about BGW reaching capacity during Howl-O-Scream and Christmas Town. They think we're exaggerating when we tell them not to go on a Saturday so I'm not sure what more can be done.

Hey everyone. Here's my review from 10/05. I followed Zachary's advice on planning. We were able to hit every house before 8:30, with RoAE having the only wait--about 25 minutes.

13...I had read a lot of negative comments going into 13. However, this was the best house of the evening. We were in the first group of people let in for the night and had a blast. Some of my favorite moments came from the Torture Room (what a horrible smell!) and the Doctor's Room. In the latter, one patient appeared to shake in a seizure like manner. Lots of scares, lots of cool detail.

Deadline...Second best of the evening. I haven't been to HoS in 7 years, so every house was brand new to me. The detail and set design here was the best of the night, especially the subway car ride. One of the most disturbing images from HoS. Scareactors also seemed on point throughout the maze.

Bitten...Lazy theme, but the scareactors made the house unforgettable. Their timing and commitment made up for the lack of creativity. There was one corridor where 4 vampires scared us back-to-back. It was one of the few moments we had to actually run out of a room.

Catacombs...Greatest disappointment. Not only did the house use darkness to make up for lack of theming, but all the scareactors had on the exact same costume. There were some good scares here and there, but overall, the house is missing atmosphere.

Fear Fair...Much better than expected. Clowns do not scare me. However, chicken coops do. The actors here did seem a bit insane, which helped with their characters. Theming in this house was up there with Deadline, IMO. Lots of great detail and attention to layout. One complaint: the maze seems understaffed, therefore misses out on a lot of good scare potential. Especially in areas with lots of plantation.

Root of All Evil...Not too big on the scares, but great on the theming. I'll admit the minions handling the shovels gave me a couple good jumps, but not much else. I mostly enjoyed the greenhouse atmosphere, fog, and lights. Coolest part about this house was the lagoon creature.

Unfortunately, we were too tired to hit any shows. We did get to experience a good bit of the roaming hordes, who did a great job attacking people in the streets. Despite having so-so costumes on, they were able to get into character. Running into the clowns and chain-saw maniacs at the same time in a foggy, pumpkin lightened street near the entrance was pure mayhem.

Thanks again for your advice and tips. I just won tickets to Halloween Horror Nights. If anyone can help me conquer each of those houses in one night, please give me a DM or link. It's much appreciated.

This is actually shocking to me. I have always thought this was very well put together. The Catacombs in France, if you didn't know, are actually underground therefore it being so dark was just naturally common sense to me. Also, if you look at many skeletons, they all look the same. I mean bone structure can vary some with a few distinct features but mostly bones tend to all look the same. I can't tell my femur from anyone else's femur, other than the fact that its in me.

The whole underground grave thing is actually a very good concept, and after going through each year it has been there, I have always thought this maze to be one of my favorites. I like how when you enter you get that feeling that you are walking down and down into the ground but not really.

I also love the different paths they had, that got me confused but that is the point. And plus if you have extra paths, it really adds to that sense of realism.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to say what you experienced, I was just letting you know my experience in previous years.

Done with my rant.

^I like the fact that there is similarity in the costumes. They are skeletons after all.
Anyway, aside from the "catacombs" burial theme, think of it like the movie Aliens. All of the aliens look alike. The surrounding architecture of an alien hive mimics the look of the aliens. While walking through the corridors and seeing all of this creepy architecture that appears to be the same, something moves. What was it? Then you see it. One of those things that you thought was just a harmless wall is really an alien!!
Now insert skeletons and skull walls, etc. Good scares. Fun times. Great house.

Not in the mood for writing up a big review but, here is what I feel from my visit last Saturday.

I got parked and in the park at 8pm...
After this I knew it would be impossible to do even the majority of the houses. I was mistaken.
When I walked in I was decently happy with the first set of decorations. The pumpkin trees where very cool.
I went to deadline which like its name is a deadline on the inside. Not sure where you guys got that it was soo elaborate on decorations because it seemed to be very meh. The scare actors where very sub-par and the scares where obvious.

After that disappointment I was happy to see the bridge was still animated. Walking to Fear fair on the bridge was f'n awesome but, afterwards it was so depressing that the bridge was soon gone from my mind. The line was supposed to be 40min but, a guy in the bathroom told me it would only take 20min which it did. The maze was very good but, ruined by my friends. It was very long and if you walked slow for a bit you could separate yourself from the line. The scare actors where bad for the most part but the few that were good really got you.

At this point I bolted to ROAE and passed the lady of the gardens setup that was in Italy which was amazing. Going to ROAE was sad and made you feel like you weren't in any halloween related place. The line was about 45min and I was excited since I heard chainsaws. This maze although a good thought was straight up awful on the scares. The guys with the chainsaws where very bad at what they did and people where getting confused in the maze. I really did not enjoy it.

My friends went I griffon and I walked to catacombs. There was no wait and I walked right in by myself. I got scared so good in the maze it was crazy. Literally they popped out from everywhere. I love the music they always play and the atmosphere they have in it. The hand coming down from the ceiling actual made me jolt. Overall the best maze of the night.

I then walked to 13 and it was a pile of steaming wtf have we made. The idea was great but execution along with the line control made it one of the worst experience I have had in a maze. The big issues were that people were scared to cross the fear of heights and the fear of dark area. I think this maze needs to be taken away from the park and be replaced with some sort of Biten meets Frankenstein theme.

Did not go to Biten since I have been in it a thousand times. Also saw only the clown horde and was not too impressed.

The park overall is still in a building stage and will have HOS back in a golden age in 2-3 years.

About Fear Fair...it is my favorite haunted house. I love wicked clowns and all things about carnivals. It is best seen at night because of the open-air between tents and some of the tents with light tops. It is full of CLOWNS!! Lots of people seem to be genuinely afraid of clowns. This is Howl-O-Scream and you are here to be scared. Go through Fear Fair. SCREAM!!!!! Go through again...repeat.

Some things to make it even better:

1. More clowns please!! Too much empty space.

2. Put the XXXXXL dirty drawers with massive skid marks back near a tent exit so you have to duck under or move it around as you pass. Where it is now it is too easy to avoid. Everyone I go through with always says this is gross.

3. For the life of me I don't understand why the dark room with neon-colored circles on the wall and two giant balls is empty of scare actors. They should have stronger black lights and/or strobes in there along with a clown wearing a dark costume with neon glow circles on it. You know how cool & creepy that would be with him dancing around in there laughing? The perfect clown/costume for this job is already in the haunted house (HINT - I have seen him at the beginning with the barber shears) and he should be reallocated.

4. The chicken coop room needs to have feathers flying around. Set up a couple of fans and throw feathers. Also, some of the chickens need to be animated to really get the feel of being in a coop. Shouldn't be too hard.

Went last Sunday with my fiance and her niece. Actually enjoyed going in the Oregonish weather, added to the whole scale of things. I loved haunted houses though its hard to pull a scare on me as I'm crazy observant of my surroundings. In order to do so, you really have to sneak up and get me from behind or jump right out in front of me if I didn't see you first.

We first went to Bitten, which was ok and I didn't get scared but liked the themeing. Michelle and niece got startled a few times. Next we went to Root which had a long long line, Got a hair startled buy the guy with the power tiller who started it up right when i got next to him and didn't notice him. From Root we went to festhaus for Night Beats. Very fun, lot of music I like. Uber cheesy. Off to Freight Fair, which was plenty nice, but only one scare for me. Michelle and niece got scared about 1/4 time, girl behind us must have ripped her boyfriends shoulders out a few times with all her screaming and jumping.

Niece ran away to hunt down a fuzzy unicorn. Michelle and I went to Deadline, which was awesome. The strobes and billows really threw me off, got jolted no less than 4 times. Michelle about the same. From deadline we hit 13, which was tame until the fear of heights, which freaked me out. It was very realistic, and I didn't realize that there was plexiglass on the sides of the plank. I do have a fear of heights, which is why I rarely do coasters with big dips and drops. We had a group of d-bags in front of us though and the line was long long long.

Next went to see Fiends and met back up with niece (still sans unicorn) which was exceedingly funny. I felt a bit like I was in a strip joint but was laughing the entire time. Got a glare from the lady in front of us with her 5 yr old daughter when the monsters went down to his skivvies and I asked Michelle and niece (17) if they needed any dollar bills.

Finished with Catacombs. Michelle was royally scared and clung to me the entire time, one actor followed her through 2 rooms hovering right over her which royally freaked her out.

Saw the hoardes when they first started out. Were ok. I got started by a few werewolves when walking around and through fog, also by the bungee wolf.

Overall its was a blast and I will try to go again Friday or Saturday after a training at Yorktown. The actors for the most part didn't scare me as I could see them before the scare, or the just lean over and glare at you. Not really scary. They were picking on Michelle and niece more though. Niece tried to get the unicorn, even by bribing to no luck.

When I went on opening weekend, one of the scare actors kicked one of the balls at me, the only time I jumped all night :p

I just don't understand the popularity of 13. Catacombs on the bottom? Fear Fair? oi...

I think to the average visitor (who doesn't follow this site), they're not looking for the theming quality and logistics of the as much as they are how scared they get. Obviously, if a house is complete crap, they'll complain; but BGW generally has really well-themed houses. To the average visitor, the one that scares them the most is the winner in their eyes. WHen you take a house like 13, the whole premise is to play with your biggest fears. The 13 featured in the house are some of the most common phobias you will come across, so more people will find the Heights room, or even the insect room, ten times scarier than a skeleton. Plus, if someone suffers from more than one of the 13 phobias, it will clearly be the most scary in their eyes.

That's just my opinion.

Those people scaring you are enhancing the phobia. Take a stuffed clown and put it next to someone afraid of clowns; they flip out. Take a person in a clown costume and put them next to someone afraid of clowns; they have a panic attack then flip out. The people enhance the phobia.

no, it didn't. Get someone in the house who is afraid of clowns, then get in a clown mask and get up all close to freak them out. I love heights, but if this maze wants to live it's gotta go. It causes backups galore
