I think what netdvn is trying to say is, the park was specifically promoting Howl-o-Scream as opening earlier, where as in years past they just said they were opening. It is all about the wording and advertising.
As far as calendars go, the Pass Holder Calendars were released later in the year vs. the Early Spring PDF so they probably weren't going to open until later and then made the change and then sent out the pass holder calendars. Also, the park was going to stay open until 11pm this Saturday, but due to the threat of weather they stuck with 10pm, or at least that is what I gathered from an employee Friday and Saturday.

This sounds like it is finally turning into the scare is everywhere.
I think the park had big hopes for 2010, and they took a break in 2011 to learn from their mistakes, and now in 2012 they are actually successfully able to pull off the 2010 theme only because they have learned from previous errors.
Such as having scare zones and not naming them or labeling them on a map with fewer actors was not going anywhere. They needed to throw in hordes and bam, you automatically got a better event.
I think their goal with 2012 was to retry 2010 but improve upon it. So far, the park has struck gold with this.
If you haven't noticed the park has added a new featured creature each weekend sorta. Clowns and Zombies the first weekend. Werewolves the second. Ghosts/Skeletons? the third. The park is ever expanding its scare squad as the weeks fly by. I think the last weekend is the weekend to go this year.
Also, if you ever visit the park and it rains at the beginning of the evening and then stops after a bit and then perfect night weather, you get the best possible experience. The park will be very empty, the pathways wet, rain beginning to evaporate and you mix in the fog and hordes. It was the perfect creepy atmosphere that you see in the movies.
