When the rats actually went across. Which was not common.

Even when they didn't, it was fun to watch the rats in their well-themed habitat there in the middle of the path...

I agree, whole-heartedly. Walked or not, it was seriously entertaining. When we watched, of the 3 rats placed on the wire, only 2 made it across completely. The first one made a mad dash and was fearless. The second one had second thoughts half way through but went too far to turn back (if I could imagine what it was thinking). The last one was like WTF 3 ft out and turned around. After the 3rd attempt the rat "keeper" didn't argue with said rat and returned it back safely to the cage.

The "keeper" explained no matter how many times they rehearse with the rats, sometimes they do what they want to do.

Everyone was cheering them little guys on though and then I proceed to Grogan's Pub for another Pumpkin Spice Ale... speaking of which I have yet to see it back in the pub on draft since 2 years ago!

No rats and no Pumpkin Spice Ale.. BGW HoS FTL.

Aside from being disappointed from the removal of MSR and Jack is Back, the overall HOS experience this year feels noticeably downsized in generally every aspect from scare-actors to HOS park decor to the lack of scare zones.

MSR - On hiatus Jack - Old unused icon + congestion = gone

Have you seen the decor? They obviously have a ton out, i especially like how MSR's wagons for the drum portion are located by the troll bridge near Festa along with Hunted/Unleashed's rocks and a few ghosts.

RoAE wasn't bad and featured an innovative path re-direct "feature" with a scare-actor directing ones path about half-way through the maze. The white port-a-pody like prop is amazingly effective and scared the piss out of a couple in front of us, causing me to laugh hysterically. The make-up though looked cheap on most actors and a dude in a wet-suit in a pond is just not scarey. Put him in a ghillie suit and now you have a "swamp thing" that could work better. I did not see any aforementioned Lady of the Garden actresses on this run. Time of day was dusk so perhaps it would've been scarier during night. Approx. wait was 45 minutes.

The guy in the pond isn't supposed to be scary, it is supposed to be unexpected and startling.

There are two Lady of the Gardens, one before the pond and one after. They are there to direct you past the pond.

Now the lack of scare-zones. DUMB IDEA. I saw werewolves once that were running around like a pack of upright dogs. All it did was just make one want to step out of the way rather than run the other way. Saw a pack of honking clowns twice that were sort of chillin'. Only one guy near the back of the pack was really into character with a creepy high pitched laugh.

If the roaming hoards are to work, they need some serious team work. And STAY in character! Otherwise, it fails. Miserably.

You must not have been to the park. I will admit the wolves need some work, after all this was there first weekend so I am not judging them too harshly. All the clowns are very excellent and do stay in character. After seeing them at least 10 times the past two weekends total, they all do really well and I wouldn't change them at all. Even saw one go so far as to get into the woods area just to walk around and sneak up on some people sitting on a bench. Plus, the guys with the chainsaws were great too. There were like three of them that wander slowly behind the rest that really get the job done great!

Overall, it leaves each country feeling, well, un-scary and EMPTY. The general lack of decor (compared to previous years) doesn't help either. I would think by the 3rd operating weekend they would have the majority of everything decorated. Guess not.

England had noticeably less crows, the pathway leading into Italy from Pompeii was nearly undecorated, Scottland was underwhelmingly plain, and France had noticeably less rats. Ireland though had nicely lit pumpkins.

I guess you need a recap of the decor?

England is very well done, so 10 less crows, that isn't much of a difference.

Ireland is superb. All the yellow wires attached to the executive monsters and the cogs on Abbeystone and the green is all just amazing. BTW, it does not have pumpkins.

Scotland looks great with the Jack O'Lantern skyline at night, that is really all the decor you need with how well they did that.

Wild Reserve is full of tombstones and ghosts. Tons and tons! It looks fantastic!

France, again 10 missing rats is nothing to be worried about. I mean I think they did perfect and it looks EXACTLY like the same amount of rats as previously if not more.

New France, Werewolves looking good as they look life like and real in the night time. Spiders also make a good compliment. The bridge to Aplengiest is amazing, using mummies for spider victims was a good idea.

Rhinefeld could use some more along with Oktoberfest.

San Marco and the Gardens of DaVinci's Inventions is looking great. Broken pots, crates, wagons, etc. line the pathway making it look outdone.

Festa's bridge is over the top from previous years. The hanging fabric is great, but I wish they could keep the fabric from becoming just a straight line rather than a wall. The actual area can use a bit more.

Pompeii is it's own attraction and decor.

Overall, you seemed to miss just about everything or you just went the first weekend? Tons and tons of decor everywhere! Even Atlantis had said, he hasn't seen so much decor before. Where have you been?

The feel in the park is amazing now and will get even better.

Plus, if you read over it, you probably did, I mentioned that the park is doing more extensive work this week as well. All this was planned, and this decor is being placed in the park on time.

The trend seems to be downward and disappointing.

BGW, what are you people DOING!?!

Your post is so disappointing. The fact that you siad the pumpkins were in Ireland where they were CLEARLY in Scotland make me doubt the legitimacy of your post. I think you were just greatly mislead and had expectations beyond anyone's imagination.

I will give my full review of the past two weekends later on when I have time. I mena after being there every day, I have a lot to say!

Do the chainsaw guys walk all over Scotland or just in one paticular area? Same with the clowns, are they just on the Festa Bridge or do they roam all over Festa Italia?

They have a chainsaw horde and a clown horde that roam the park, IN ADDITION to having about 5 scare actors stay in an area throughout the night.

The clowns on the bridge will stay on the bridge, while the horde may go all the way into Festa, same with the chainsaws.

Been a long time lurker of this site. I love Busch Gardens, But I especially love Halloween. Two of my favorite things together! Would seem great right?

I've got to say, as far as Howl-O-Scream goes the past few years, I've been EXTREMELY unimpressed. Last year was a good step in the right direction, My problem is this is Busch Gardens. One of the top Theme Parks in the world, easily. They could be (and should be) doing so much more. I visited opening weekend and have to say I was straight devestated at the lack of quality. I plan on going to the Haunt soon and HOS again right after. Judging from the pictures of the as of yet unfinished Haunt at Kings Dominion and what I've seen from Howl-O-Scream, I've got to Say, The Haunt looks like it could stand up to the parks in Orlando this year. Busch, Not so much. Infact, Kings dominion looks more "Finished" than Busch.

The hours need to be extended and there needs to be more to do. The Haunts in Kings Dominion change up every year to keep them fresh. Bitten has been left exactly the same for 5 years. Kings Dominion is clearly by far the more Sub-Par park, But the set pieces in their scarezones are awesome looking. Two story towers and things that fit an actual theme that dont look like party decoration or some stuff home-haunters do. I pay to go to a theme park for a haunt to see things that I CANT DO AT HOME!(Like the sheets in the clown scarezone last year hanging from the wire) It looks cheap and tacky. Wooden boxes, Wooden Gates, rope and Cheese cloth make up the majority of the Busch Scare Zones and decoration. Cheap dollar store plastic body parts. The Scarezones and decoration should look more like Ireland, all over.

Kings Dominion also has More haunts... And I know there is plenty of space in Busch Gardens for more. Kings Dominion has 6 Shows Though I'll have to admit, Busch's is normally of Higher Quality), 6 ScareZones and 10 Mazes, and their admission cost is HALF of what you pay for Busch!!!!

They have "Howl-o-Fest"(Which seems like a blatant attack at Busch's Halloween stuff) During the day for kids including 10 different activities!

WHAT IS BUSCH DOING?

And I know there are several of you busch devoted non-believers out there who will just scoff at what I'm saying but, take a look at this:

35487_10151147940557272_1199573265_n.jpg

This is a Scare Zone set piece at kings dominion. Their scarezones are FULL of stuff like this. I challenge you to find one thing like it in the busch decoration for a themed area that is not designed to sell alcohol.

Busch Is getting cheap. I've been wanting to say it for years but after finally getting over the shock of the first weekend I just had to say something.

Kings Dominion this year seem to have rid themselves of all but one of the lackluster haunts (Medieval macabre)... That leaves them with 8 amazing mazes (I've heard great things about no vacancy from sources) and the others that return Like The Doll Factory(one of my favorites), CornStalkers, Toxic Plague, Slaughter House, Club Blood, Outbreak and Camp Killauee.

If Busch keeps on screwing up and people start realizing there is a better value 45 minutes up the road, HOS attendance will start to drop. You can only take a dump on your loyal customers for so long before they start realizing that the competition is doing it bigger and better. And considering they do it bigger and better at BGT all the time, I find there is no excuse for the sorry display Busch has been putting in their williamsburg location. They are no longer above the competition, and have been under the fantasy that they are so far above what the competition up the road is doing, that nothing they can do can be as bad as what they got. Wrong. The fact that a park such as Busch is less well themed and decorated than a park like Kings Dominion is silly and inexcusable. I'm also sure Howl-O-Scream makes so much money, There is absolutely no excuse why they cant spend more money on it.

Money is never as important as guest experience. It's Time Busch realizes it for Williamsburg.

That set piece looks like it was thrown together with materials cheaper than items people are calling cheap on BGW. Not to mention thrown in the middle of the path? Something tasteless and illuniformed. Yepp, must be KD!

BTW I would not be so quick to say something you might find in Orlando Parks. USF HHN has had pretty turd reviews this past weekend.

I heard Clark Griswold has a ton of decorations at his house for Christmas. Does not meant that it looks good.

Heh. You don't know how much any of that cost. Busch uses the same series of statues for the queue in catacombs.

It looks quite great, and once the night falls and it's all properly lit and fogged up, I bet it looks amazing. Not to mention this is a shot of only one of the props. You cant see anything else on the path that would be close to it.

Also I'm sorry the props on the path a Busch look horrible, like I said Ropes, and wooden things... With random paint splatters. Atleast this TRIES to look like something.

Obviously someone has no idea what quality over quantity is... Sure I was impressed with the scare zones last year at haunt but, that was really the only impressive thing about it. The actors in just about every house and the quality of every house was very sub-par. They don't even use distractions 75% of the time to get the scares which in most cases will fail miserably. Haunt is nowhere near HNN if you ever go that statement would be retracted in a heartbeat.

I'm going to HHN in Orlando this weekend. I've heard several complaints from this past opening weekend. However, I heard it was raining . It's suppose to be nice this weekend. I'm hoping for a great 1st time experience there.

I'm thinking of Never-after! yes Wicked woods was where Sea Dog Cemetery was and that area now has Forest of fun. It was also where Fear Fair was. my fault for confusing the two

The *last* Wicked Woods was located and Fear Fair is located behind Roman Rapids. Sea Dong Cemetery and Forest of Fun are located across from Pompeii. Two different places.

Sea Dog Cemetery, and the original Wicked Woods was in the former petting zoo area, now the location of FOF. Never After was a maze located in the DF Warehouse a few years ago before it became Hunted and now is the green rooms for the hordes and Bitten. Harvest Hollow was the path back to the main path outside of Bitten when Never After and Hunted were running.
