I think we’re going to see a variation of Pumpkin Eater somewhere in the park this year. Kings Island last year during Haunt did a wonderful scare zone with great atmosphere similar to the floating pumpkins found in Scotland at BGW. I could easily see this as a replacement for where Feary Tales once was or better yet, a new house.

I actually thought about this being a possibility after reading the hint. After all, Pumpkin Eater involves pumpkins and decapitation! I’m honestly not sure if I would want to see this as a zone or a maze, though. Both have their advantages.

I noticed The Lair has been removed from the website. Hmm...

Edit: Zombie High is also gone. Hmmmm....

Zombie High and The Lair both showed their age, and honestly I’m fine with both being gone. Assuming that these are the only attractions leaving, I’m surprised that Ironworx is still in the lineup as I was convinced that Jack Frost permanently froze it over.

Grave Walkers is also gone from the website...

This is huge if true!

So I was looking on the website this morning and realized that in addition to Zombie High, The Lair, and Grave Walkers, the OVERLORD’S RESURRECTION has been removed from the Haunt website!

I’m not sure if this was removed in the first wave or not, but either way it’s gone now. I’ll be very sad if this actually ends up being axed as it’s one of my favorite parts of each visit!

The old Overlord's Resurrection at the front of the park and MetallicA "For whom the bell tolls" music (they still use the bell sound part) was truly great. Then metal became unfashionable so they had to screw with it around 2010. I thought they moved it to the main stage because it was too popular to fit.

You’re 100% correct about the relocation to the Bandstand. Not only was it too popular for the front of the park to handle, but having it at the bandstand also makes it easier for guests already in the park to see the show. Nowadays it isn’t uncommon to see the entire plaza around the Eiffel Tower filled with people.

I never realized the bell sound was Metallica though! This is the music that was used from around 2012 to 2017:

Last year that music was replaced with a more rock-style soundtrack which lacks some of the creepiness factor of the old song, but makes up for it with an edgier “oh shit this is cool” rhythm. You can hear the new song here:

Personally, I think the resurrection is one of the most unique and coolest aspects of Haunt. I don’t think many parks have this type of central show that opens the event, at least not nearly this popular or engrained in the tradition of the park. Hopefully something similar takes its place, if it is indeed dead (again).

Having it at the front really worked for Friday nights, not so much for when people were already there. SFA tried their version last year back in the arena, they ought to do theirs in the front because there's lots of space.

A couple of observations.

  • I noticed that in the park, the Haunt posters have the dates listed as September 21st through November 3rd. Are we getting an extra weekend of Haunt this year? If so, this will be the first time in years that the park has scared guests after Halloween!
  • I took a quick look to see if other Cedar Fair parks had announced lineups yet for their Haunt events, and here's what I found (apologies for this looking repetitive, but it's like this on purpose to make a point):

  1. California's Great America has removed two scare zones and zero mazes from their website but has not announced anything yet.
  2. Canada's Wonderland has removed one scare zone and zero mazes from their website but has not announced anything yet.
  3. Carowinds has removed two scare zones and announced three new scare zones for 2019. They removed one maze without replacing it.
  4. Cedar Point has removed one scare zone and zero mazes from their website but has not announced anything yet.
  5. Dorney Park's website is a bit wonkier. Two scare zones have been "removed," meaning that Necropolis was pushed to the maze side for some reason (this could simply be a coding error, as it was Dorney's newest scare zone for 2018) and an additional scare zone was replaced with a "Coming Soon" placeholder. For simplicity's sake, let's just say that Dorney has removed one scare zone and zero mazes from its website.
  6. Kings Island has removed two scare zones and zero mazes from their website but has not announced anything yet.
  7. Knott's Scary Farm is also a unique situation. Because they're the largest Haunt in the Cedar Fair chain, they completely wipe their website and announce what is returning and what is coming all in one event. They have 9 coming soon placeholders for mazes and 4 coming soon placeholders for scare zones. This is the same number of each that were there in 2018, but Knott's is unpredictable and anything can happen.
  8. Valleyfair has removed one scare zone and zero mazes from their website but has not announced anything yet.
  9. Worlds of Fun has removed one scare zone and zero mazes from their website but has not announced anything yet.
My point for listing all of this out was that there is something that glares at me with this list. Almost none of the parks are touching their maze lineup and all of the parks are messing with their scare zone lineup. Could this be a scare zone-focused year for Cedar Fair all-around? Bringing it back to Kings Dominion, could we see Zombie High not be replaced with anything at all? What do y'all think? I will definitely keep an eye on when other CF parks announce their lineups (I'm surprised Carowinds announced there's so early), but I think this could be a very interesting year.

^This, I will gladly let them take Zombie High if it means that building is getting AC.

It was DANGEROUSLY HOT in that house the first time I went last year. Like beyond the other houses which were also really hot, for whatever reason I distinctly remember that house being unbearable and extremely unsafe to be in.

I agree. Both of the maze buildings at that end of the park (Blood on the Bayou and Zombie High) always seem to be warmer than the others. I do hope they add AC to all mazes this season. Maybe that's already in the plan? I would assume that scare zones are much less expensive to create and maintain than mazes, so they could use the extra money to do this in theory. I'm for it.

Rumor has it that obviously zombie high is no longer teaching classes, lair is no more, and that they are bringing two new scare zones for 2019. I don't believe anything will be going into zombie high probably because of the AC issue in the building. A lot of scare actors that were in ZH last year complained of the unsafe work conditions.

Looks like this is pretty spot on. Checked out the website a couple minutes ago and it now has 2 placeholder spots on the Scare Zone section with "Coming Soon." Interestingly, it's the same thing for the Shows section, with 2 placeholders added. The mazes remain untouched though, no placeholders.

Looking like this will be a scare zone focused year, which I think they really needed anyway. The mazes got a lot of focus the last handful of years, with very little happening in the scare zones. While new mazes are always great, I'm looking forward to a refresh of the scare zone line up. Guess I'll just wait patiently another year for my werewolf maze wish to come true, but really excited to see what they come up with for the scare zones.

Another round of Haunt updates!

As noted above, we now have confirmation that there are TWO new scare zones and TWO new shows! This is going to be a busy year!

Here are my predictions. If you remember from a little while back, the park gave us two hints in the June 2019 Reader’s Mailbag: “carving the pumpkins” and “lose your head.” I’m still thinking that the hints are pointing towards Pumpkin Eater from Kings Island. As for the other scare zone, I have no idea. It’s safe to say that one will replace The Lair and the other will probably be in Feary Tales’ old spot. My guess is that the two new shows will be the new Grande Bandstand show that was announced by Moonmaxx Productions in late June (a name or description was not given) and a re-theme of the Overlord’s Resurrection (other Cedar Fair parks have “Overlord’s Awakening” and SCarowinds is getting a closing ceremony in addition to retheming their Overlord opening, so maybe that’s what we could do, too!). What do y’all think?

From outside Doswell... Cedar Point has announced a new scare zone (a sequel to an older zone), and Kings Island has announced FOUR (wow) new scare zones. This keeps the pattern of a scare-zone centric year for the entire Cedar Fair chain. I’m happy to see this especially at KD where we endured a five-year period of no new scare zones before The Yard debuted last season.

We don't have a thread for KD Halloween Haunt but looks like KD will be having four new attractions for Halloween Haunt. Maybe they will be adding new zones and houses? Since BGW and KD typically keep up with each other, maybe BGWs announcements coming soon will be something similar to what KD will unveil?
