That location needs to have something. There’s nothing else in old Virginia other than country kitchen, which is on the other side of the arbor tunnel.

I preferred the Wayside Grille name as it was very Virginian. Everywhere else they are called rest stops 😁

[Note for Admins: not sure if this post deserves its own thread, or just a rename of the existing thread; given how we've kept the same thread going for the past couple of eateries at this Old Virginia location.]

For the beginning part of the 2026 season, Dogwood's Fries has been listed as coming soon:

And here this past weekend it opened, with its official menu as:

Regional Executive Chef Harry Smith recently touted the new 'hand-cut french fry concept' in the post/video here. And I must say, I was pretty impressed on trying the new fries; they were delicious and are currently my favorite french fry offering found in the park.

I also tried the corn dog. And though I am by no means a corn dog fan, I was pleasantly surprised to see them use a nice size jumbo dog, which was decently 'filling'.

All-in-all, the fries are what makes the new restaurant. It's great to see an eatery come back to this location, helping offset the lack of food options in Old Virginia. And with the removal of all the Boardwalk Fries locations this past off season, it's nice to see a corn dog option offered at the park again (for families with 'picky' eaters).

It is a shame to lose the loaded fries basket from Excavator Taters. The few times it was open last year, I enjoyed grabbing a basket and sitting by the lake. It was a great option if I wasn't too hungry and wanted to get use out of my dinning pass.

Edit:
I also say this as someone who doesn’t eat hotdogs anymore because I saw how they get made.
How do you feel about regular sausage?

I'm curious how the fries will hold up once daily ops start - I'm guessing they're going to need to staff at least one person constantly on prep, which I'm also guessing they wouldn't want to budget for.

I counted three in my post lol…

Obviously I was being a bit flippant. I certainly will put plenty other things on there from time to time - bacon, a nice jalapeño slaw I make, sauerkraut, spicy relish, etc. just keep that godawful sweet glop that overpowers literally every other flavor present far away. 😉

Yea because mustard is not overpowering at all for stuff vs ketchup. Ive eaten 1000s of glizzys in my life never not been able to taste the hotdog with ketchup on it haha
