Nora, I've loved live Irish music and dance ever since being introduced to it at the Dublin Irish Festival, over 10 years ago. When we got our BGW passes last year, I was much more interested in riding roller coasters than attending shows. I discovered Celtic Fyre right at the end of the season. This year I've tried to catch CF and KVB as often as I can. After a long, long drought from live Irish music, it's been lovely. I very much appreciate what a privilege it is to have the opportunity to see these talented performers and championship-class dancers perform on a regular basis. I think those of us who watched CF throughout the season realized we were seeing something unique and special happen onstage, as the cast coalesced and became a family both onstage and off. That kind of special chemistry is a very rare thing in the entertainment industry, and when it happens the performances just crackle with energy and intensity. When it's over, performers may search their entire careers trying to recapture that special spark.
I've taken on this project as a way to preserve for myself some of that magic, as well as video can do so. In the fields of science and engineering, we live by an axiom: If it's not written down, it never happened. Similarly, if the magic we all experienced on the final day of the season isn't captured somehow, it will fade from memory with time, and evaporate into the ether. I'm old enough now that I can regret that some of my best times as a younger man went undocumented. My memories of those times will fade, and when I forget, it will be like they never happened. I think you have a similar motivation behind your passion for the BGWmemories project. My hope is that, decades from now, sitting in the retirement home, I'll be able to rewatch this video and relive some of the Celtic Fyre magic. I'm happy that others out there will enjoy watching, as well.
