Apparently a Santa Clara City Council member is reaching out to the thoosie-tubers asking them to share and sign this petition some kid made. I saw Canobie share it a couple weeks ago and just now I saw CoasterDash shared it. I've been hearing that City Council might put up a fight about anything other than CGA being there... perhaps this is some proof of that.

how that gonna work?, oh wait, that's Santa Clara city council member talking

My understanding is that the city can block redevelopment of the property for a different purpose, but that they cannot force Six Flags or Prologis to keep the park in operation. I think most can agree that an abandoned amusement park is not what anyone wants, so unfortunately no matter how many petitions are signed I don't think this park has a future unless there is a change of heart from one or more companies currently involved in the property.

On another note, I made a brief visit to the park last weekend while I was in the bay area for a relative's wedding, and while the park doesn't feel like one on the edge of death, it is pretty apparent that they're only receiving the budget for what is mandatory to operate the park. Meanwhile, SFDK has clearly received an enhancement budget based on the number of small but noticeable improvements I spotted around the property. Take that for what you will.

if the city block redevelopment of the property, my guess is that it should be come a multi entertainment complex similar to the statefarm stadium Arizona complex

hello, im the kid who created the petition. as always (or at least on reddit), my parents are running the account, so should there be an age limit on this, i should be a-ok(ish). so if you have any questions about the petition or my goals or whatever, just ask them here. ill check this sometimes. and uh, maybe share the petition if you can? more signatures is better (as always)

Yeah having a shopping district outside of stadiums has become incredibly popular as of late, Philadelphia's sports complex is going to go through a major redevelopment project soon to create one of them. Could see that happening here, although Great America's land would likely just be used for parking because the actual district would likely go in a space currently held by parking.

If this park is to survive you need a new developer to come in looking to operate the park, and believes the potential of the park is worth more than the land the park actually sits on which is....a stretch. The city might try and hold out for a little while but unless someone comes along it'll be for nothing. Prologis will just let the site fall into disrepair until they get their way. A redeveloper who owns a bunch of historic buildings near me is doing something similar. Let the buildings fall apart until they're unsalvageable (or in this case the city gives up) and you get approval to take everything down and build what you want.

It really is just a textbook strategy that scummy redevelopers use when they run into opposition from locals, eventually there's a breaking point. A similar situation is happening with Six Flags New Orleans, will likely happen to Six Flags America, and already happened to Geauga Lake (although to a lesser extent). City governments can say they have big plans for these sites all they want but in the end these corporations hold all the cards.

People seem to forget that upon termination of the lease, Six Flags will remove their property (rides and attractions) from the land.

As we are actively seeing with SFA, rides and such will not vanish from the property en masse once it closes. Most of the roller coasters aren't even worth selling or relocating due to age or other factors.

I'm not holding out much hope, but if someone made SF (and prologis) an offer for the park (and land), I could see both companies taking the money.
