RE: Brauhaus Craft Bier Room Coming to Festhaus Kaffe in 2016

This was exactly what I predicted on page 4 but BGbackdoor shot me down. As I said before, it's a way for the park to sell 300 steins that they normally wouldn't sell. Fantastic marketing in my honest opinion. I think it will be very popular.

Edit: a pint of good beer for $5 is a great deal from a bar standpoint.

And from an Amusement Park standpoint too

Looking forward to this on Saturday. Might end up getting a stein, but I'm goin to take a guess that they will be $40-$60. When I was in Munich, Germany I got one for around $60.

Well I see its $40 to join. First beer free is a win, and with pass discount on $5 beer its worth it.

My top two local recommendations from this list are the Lickinghole, and Hardywood brews. Both breweries are seething with quality.

Hardywood all day, can't believe their Great Return IPA is gonna be on tap at BG. I've never got around to trying out Lickinghole, glad to hear good things; what are some of their best brews?

RE: Brauhaus Craft Bier Room Coming to Festhaus Kaffe in 2016

I'm pretty pumped about this and can't wait to try all new beers. I'm comfortable in the food served will be just as good as everything else.

Thx for the price info.  Definitely planning on trying wheat and German/Belgium beers.  Saddened though that Weihenstephaner did not make the list.

The Virginia Black Bear is my favorite. You have to be careful with it though, its ABV is nearly 10%. I'm really hoping this is BG's LCB tap choice.

Edit. I haven't tried the 'till sunset ipa' they have listed for Lickinghole. One more reason to go to BGW!

They did say that they will be rotating brews, who knows what will be on tap next.

I apparently only date men who are craft beer enthusiasts and have therefore been dragged to over 60 breweries in the past 5 years, including many from this list. Because I need to use that knowledge for something, here is my unsolicited review of the beers the Brew house is offering....

Lager and Pils
Devils Backbone Schwartz Bier- One of their classics, very solid.
Goose Four Star Pils - Have not had
Hofbräu München Original- Have not had
Pabst Blue Ribbon- Do not buy this. If you really want a PBR, you can buy a 12 pack for like $5 at the 7-11 near the park.

Pale Ale
Alewerks Chesapeake Pale Ale- Not my favorite Alewerks but it is one of their classics
Brass Cannon Angry Scot- Brass Cannon is a local brewery but their quality needs some work. The Angry Scot is one of their better beers (and the one they put the most effort into) but I honestly would probably never order it again.
Starr Hill Grateful Pale Ale- Have not had this but Starr Hill is a pretty decent VA brewery.

Brown Ale and Dark Lager
Founders Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale- Not my type of beer but you can't go wrong with Founders
Hofbräu München Dunkel- I don't think I've had this?
Legend Brown Ale- Very solid brown ale
Seven Arrows Hermenator Doppelbock-  I LOVE Seven Arrows.  I'm honestly fairly surprised that they will be on tap since they are a relatively small brewery in the middle of nowhere VA but their beers are excellent.  Glad they are expanding enough to offer theme park distribution.

Wheat
Coelacanth Coelia Rosemary Lemon Wheat- One of the few local breweries I haven't been to yet but this sounds like the type of ridiculous girly beer I would be into
Heritage American Expedition- Have not tried
Hofbräu München Hefe Weizen- Love, but I'm a Hefe Weizen fan.
Starr Hill The Love- Decent beer, one of my "safe" orders if nothing else is on tap that I recognize/like

IPA
Bell's Smitten Golden Rye Ale- Have not tried
James River 3.0 IPA- Have not tried
Hardywood Great Return IPA- Boyfriend is a big IPA fan and he loves this. I'm not a big IPA fan...
Lickinghole 'Till Sunset Session IPA- Have not had this but Lickinghole is another excellent VA brewery
St George Golden Ale- Decent, honestly do not have much to say about it.

Porter and Stout
Bell's Kalamazoo Stout- Have not had
Duclaw Sweet Baby Jesus! Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter- Overhyped, and everyone I know who has tried it likes the first sip or two and then you just get sick of drinking it.
Highland Oatmeal Porter- I don't remember if I have had this...if I did, it was apparently not memorable
O'Connor Dry Irish Stout- I've had this but I'm honestly not a big fan of Dry Irish Stouts
Smartmouth Jr. Coffee Porter- Good if you like Coffee porters (they are kind of a special breed)
St. George Porter- An ok Porter, good choice out of the current list if you just want something basic.

Amber Beers
Center of the Universe Chin Music Amber Lager- I'm honestly not a big fan of COTU.  I know others love them but they are kind of meh to me.
Evolution Exile Red Ale- Have not had.

Fruity and Ciders
Bold Rock IPA- This is actually a cider even though it says IPA. I think it stands for India Pressed Apple. If you don't like sweet ciders, this is a good choice.
Commonwealth Wapatoolie Tropical IPA- Have not had
Flying Dog Blood Orange Ale- Not very orangy taste but is a good summer beer
St. George Larry's Lemonade- I love this. Tastes exactly like lemonade, no alcohol flavoring but is somehow very high ABV. Be careful with this, it can mess you up...

Seasonal and Rotating
Champion Shower Beer Czech Style Pils- One of their more famous beers though I personally am not a big fan of Champion. Though this may just be because the bartender was an asshole to me last time I was at their brewery.
Goose Island Summer Ale- I'm actually surprised I have not had this yet. May be what I get when I go to BG
Harpoon UFO Big Squeeze- This is a shandy. I personally like shandys but I know a lot of people dont

Belgian
Commonwealth Cheval De Trait Belgian Quad- Have not had
Wild Wolf  Brewery Blonde Hunny- Wild Wolf's main beer. Very good.

Bazarro
New Holland Dragon's Milk Bourbon Barrel Stout- I have not had this and it honestly sounds like something I would hate.
Smartmouth Notch 9 Double IPA- Have not had but I do not like IPAs.

I want this in Tampa now. They already have the Crown Colony Pub. I'd buy in to a plan like this. The pub is always empty anyway.

Thanks man, Virginia Black Bear, will keep that in mind and an eye out for it. Till Sunset IPA sounds delicious, will have to try this weekend!

Does Williamsburg or James City County have a taphouse or any place approaching 30 rotating taps?  I have been to Dog Street Pub a couple of times but I think of it as more restaurant than taphouse.  The Stein Club is a good deal and may draw locals into the park more frequently, especially if parking is not an issue.  I imagine it will be attractive for local parents of older kids too.

I am going to try to behave myself at the parade in Norfolk and make it over on Saturday to reserve a stein though I will be surprised if they sell out on Passholder Preview (mostly because the small release of 40th anniversary documentary DVDs sold slower than most of us expected).

So happy with this offer!

I'm trying to remember how many taps Green Leafe has, it is up there but probably not 30. Downside of Green Leafe is that it is a college bar so you have to deal with that mess (plus I will no longer eat there as I have gotten food poisoning twice).

I worked across the street at the Alumni House for two years and never visited Green Leaf. How did I miss it? Guess I was at Paul's (this was the early 90s).

Paul's and the College Deli are the place to be. I still go over to both. Never liked Green Leaf.

On a side note Paul's has opened up a second place across town about two or three months back.

That's been two or three places over the years. It's actually owned by the same owners as Sal's Pizza by Victor
