RE: Kings Dominion's 40th Anniversary Celebration & Park Revitalization

As part of the park's embracing of the past, a "Popular Attractions of Yesteryear" page is now on the site. I love their acknowledgement and caring for the park's past. Plus, it has some pictures of rides I have never seen before.

You can say what you want, I think I love Cedar Fair now. Better yet, I think I love the park now...

That was there when they announced the celebration, but none-the-less, it's amazing. Simply amazing.

A few thoughts:
Yesterday I was at a costume fitting for halloween haunt and saw someone wearing a pretty sweet 40th anniversary jacket, one of the blue ones. I want one lol

Also, anyone who talks negatively about this are people who view the park negatively as a whole for one reason or another. Anyone with sense is excited for this

I went to KD the first year it opened. It will be fun to go back and, hopefully, relive some fun family memories. :)

I would love it if someone went down to Brazil and stole the King Kobra back!

RE: Kings Dominion's 40th Anniversary Celebration & Park Revitalization

Since the announcement was made in mid-September, I always had it in the back of my head that a return of a former flat ride or two was possible. A new version of the Monster and/or a refurbished Enterprise making a comeback (I don't think any current ride manufacturer fabricates new Enterprise rides anymore). At this point, I don't feel we will see a major ride investment like the Steam Train or Sky-Ride Cable Cars making a comeback; at least not for 2014.

Clint, from Coaster Crew, did have Gene, Kings Dominion PR/Marketing person, on his Weekly Pod Cast a week or so ago. The topic was Halloween Haunt and next years 40th anniversary for KD. Gene was putting out the usual amount of market spin for Haunt and next years 40th. A couple tidbits were thrown out.

International Street fountains to get new LED light package and the fountain water jets to either be completely replaced or a major overhaul done to them. Gene stated KD's park management went up to Canada's Wonderland to see their fountain light setup and Wonder Mountain projection show. Gene stated we could get a night show that would be unique to us (of course, we don't have a mountain on Intl. Street to project on). Gene alluded to the possibility of extending a light show, similar to Snoopy's Starlight Spectacular, all the way down International Street to the entrance plaza.

Candy Apple Grove to make a comeback with the over-sized candy apples scattered about. Ride light packages to be installed on several rides in the Grove area. Again, only mention of possibilities were stated, Triple Spin, Chaser lights back on the Rebel Yell, etc. Gene did state that the Ride LED light packages were currently out to bid. What ride ends up with what light package for 2014? TBD.

My personal guess is that the Grove paths will be redone in some sort of brick paver. Hopefully, no more asphalt! Also, if a flat ride were to make a comeback for 2014, I think it will be here.

Congo back to Safari Village. Anaconda is going to get repainted. Anything else happening to this ride is unknown (ex. new trains, track work). Gene did state that Volcano with be getting changes/modifications for 2014 to "improve the throughput of the ride". Take that for what you will. I don't think anything else was mentioned concerning this area.

Gene, did state that "Big/Major" annoucements were coming very soon. Whether or not we will hear anything before the park closes for the season is anyone's guess.

Seems to be that the park is fleshing out the final details and are not quite ready to spill all the details for next year's anniversary. Gene, being the marketing/PR person, probably does not get the detailed info of what is happening for next year until the last minute. Most marketing departments are kept informed at a very high, general level until the higher ups decide to give more specific information to them.

Also, they are supposed to have completed two interviews; one, with a former park manager, Wilson Flohr and another with a lady that started working at the park when the Eiffel Tower had only been completed to the 50ft observation level. Hopefully, those interviews will be posted to KD's anniversary web site in the near future.

Kings Dominion deserves so much praise for this. Rarely do you see a park recognize their employees on the "front line" of the park yet they're the ones who make what the park does each and every day possible. Great showing Kings Dominion.

Not to get too off topic; but, does anyone one know of "long-timers" at BGW? (Lets say with 25 years or more of service?)

RE: Kings Dominion's 40th Anniversary Celebration & Park Revitalization

Yes they exist, the park throws a special dinner or ceremony for continued service team members. I had a list with years recently but I'm not sure where it got to. But yes there are quite a few with more than 10 years of service, and a handful with more than 25 years of service.

RE: Kings Dominion's 40th Anniversary Celebration & Park Revitalization

We'll just never know who they are because BGW doesn't have a soul anymore.

Anyway, I shouldn't perpetuate this whole "BGW focus on the KD boards" thing so, uh, back to the 40th anniversary I guess. :p

Is KD getting a new coaster?

Based on the Park's 2014 announcement back in mid-September and the last 4 pages of comments, thoughts, and conjecture here on this site, .... no.

RE: Kings Dominion's 40th Anniversary Celebration & Park Revitalization

Some people are already jumping the gun saying yes, and I'm a hopeful guy just like them.

Give it some paint and some polish and that apple will almost look edible. It's in incredibly good condition considering that it's sat in a warehouse for 30 some-odd years.
