RE: New Globe Show for 2014

RE: New Globe Show for 2014

I remember it being the best blend of spooky and interesting. And honestly, even though it was based around a Cape Cod lighthouse, it just seemed to fit the Globe pretty well. I've always felt that the Globe is a bit spooky in itself. I wish they would play off of that more or bring back that eerie-ness (sp). This may shock a few of you, but if you ask me, I'd say its more eerie than DarKastle. I really don't know why though.

Also, not trying to be Debbie-Downer, but are kids nowadays being brought up on Beatles and Duran Duran. I know I was, but I was born in the early early 90's. I say this because I'm thinking of crowd appeal across the board.

From Screamscape: Oh, and the park has also confirmed that Pirates 4D will close down for good later this summer, with the last showing on June 16th. Look for some kind of new “live” show to replace it next year and not another 4D film. Madagascar Live maybe?

if they only knew.......

RE: New Show In The Globe?

I don't think we've actually had a proper discussion about the theme and direction the park is taking _____________ yet. For anyone who doesn't remember:

I've heard the new show is to be a British invasion themed live concert featuring songs from the 60's/70's. London Britches is being remodeled into a gift shop dedicated to merchandise for the show. The plan was for it to be launched in 2013, but the last I heard, it was being bumped to 2014.

Or, as Pandora put it:

like replacing american jukebox with an indoor British version...

Now, I understand people like the music that's going to be used, but I think there's a more important discussion to be had here about whether or not it fits the hamlet's and the park's overarching theme. Just as Entwined doesn't fit a beer hall, I don't see how a psychedelic live music show fits with Banbury Cross.

Now, though I can't say much, I can say that even the park agrees with me here. The entertainment department already knows this show doesn't fit with the hamlet it's located in and that's why there are concepts to make the hamlet's theme fit the show. As I'm sure many of you will agree, that's a terrifying prospect. The details I've been given made me physically ill. It's really bad.

My point in all of this is that we can't overlook awful theming inconsistencies just because we personally enjoy what's being offered. Replace the show's musical style with some form of British music you hate. Does the show still fit the theme? No? Exactly. This is just the next step down the very slippery slope the park has been trying to navigate since Europe in the Air.

If the park intends on changing the hamlet, one of the best looking in the park, to fit that show, it would be an utter disaster. I've tolerated a lot from the park (much to the ire of the folgiest of oldies) but changing Banbury to something out of an Austin Powers movie like Zach seems to be hinting at would be terrible.

If that actually happens, we'll talk. In the mean time I've got something else to focus my anger on.

Well if you asked me, the British invasion show could be quite nice depending on how it is presented. The old shows like Rockin' the Boat, Totally Television, Hat's off to Hollywood, etc had a very Broadway-esque feel; much like the Night Beats from the Festhaus. (Which I LOVED)

If the show is done in a classy way; I think it would be pretty cool. No need to transform London... I've been there. It is a perfect blend of old and new. In fact, it was a city I could live in (if the cost of living wasn't so high).

Personally, I would like to see more Downton Abbey, Dr. Who, Sherlock Holmes, Hitchiker's Guide, Monty Python...etc.. in Union Jax. There is so much pop culture from England- it seems to waste such a very neat opportunity to connect with our British cousins across the pond.

And for those of you who really love the obscure- Discworld. I love some Terry Pratchett stories.

What if they did a short, comedy version of a Shakespeare play. I've seen a comedy Shakespeare play and It was hilarious! It was an hour and a half long, but they could make a shorter version.

Twelfth Night is fantastic ..... It would also fit very well.

RE: New Globe Show for 2014

Just so you know... they did kind of a live action show for Shakespeare when the park first opened. Here is a link to the Blog post I wrote about Ghosts of the Globe:
http://bgwmemories.com/2013/01/20/remembering-the-past-ghosts-of-the-globe/

But I saw a comedy act at the Tower of London regarding the Battle of Trafalgar off all things. It was hilarious. I love the British can make fun of themselves with such grace. When the actor who played Admiral Nelson said "Why I would give my right arm.." I thought I was about to die laughing even though Horatio Nelson was probably one of the greatest naval strategists in history.

Still, how many people would get references like this? I just do not think many younger folks would appreciate the past. I guarantee if you ask a kid walking by who Romeo and Juliet is they would answer: "Aren't they in a Taylor Swift Song?"

If you take a 90 minute Shakespeare play and condense it to 20 minutes for a theme park crowd, you're gonna have a bad time.

I'm with Nora, I have no issue with the show, but I have huge issues with changing the hamlet just to match the show. I know they've done this with special events (Ireland last HoS), but we're talking a full renovation as opposed to temporary decorations.
