The symbol of Great Adventure from even before the park opened in July 1974 was the spectacular, colorful hot air balloon. There were actually two of them, one "standard" size and one "giant" balloon (called "THE BIG ONE").
The balloon was supposed to offer tethered rides in the park, and was taken to events outside the park as well to help promote.
To celebrate the park's opening the balloon was brought to Central Park to fly above New York City.
