2014 New Attraction Announcement – August 29
Six Flags Great Adventure and its sister parks throughout North America will announce exciting plans for the 2014 season. Great Adventure will release details about a record-breaking addition that will surely top “must-do” lists next year. Early rumors are pointing at that long rumored 450 foot drop tower attached to Kingda Ka.

It didn't stop Cedar Fair :p

No but seriously I have nothing on this, just throwing something that's apparently been in the works for 5 years now. The park was also supposed to get a 5D style ride to replace spongebob in 2011 but that fell through. There are a few untapped concepts the park had in the pipeline but got shelved due to the bankruptcy or other reasons.

Alright so as Lance has reported earlier today Great Adventure dropped 5 names in a survey, all with African-oriented names:

Kimanjo is the name of a location in Kenya.
Zumanjaro comes up with no results at all and appears to be simply made up, as if they tried to put “Zu” in font of Kilamanjaro. Sorry… as the old Disney ads used to put it, Nahtazu!
Kimondo is another province within Kenya, but also translated from Swahili as the word for a Meteor or Shooting Star in the sky.
Kushuku translates from Swahili as “Skepticism”
And finally, Shango translates from Swahili as “Chlamydia”. Ummm… yeah… they went there. Sorry… while Six Flags may end up starting a new Meme with that one, I don’t think we’ll be riding Chlamydia: The Ride anytime soon.
My vote is for Kimondo… as a shooting star is a perfect theme for a massive freefall tower I think.

Personally I find Kimanjo better but as long as I don't see Chlamydia plastered anywhere next year I'll be fine.

Six Flags just recently filed for Trademark of the 'Aqua Twist' name in the United States. What might an "Aqua Twist" be, you ask? Well here's what was built at La Ronde under the same name this year.

I don't see what exactly is record breaking about this kind of ride and it likely will just be a general park addition that gets sprinkled around like the SkyScreamers. Whether it'll get special treatment at Great Adventure or not, it definitely will help bolster the park's still depressing flat ride collection. Maybe we could see one with super capacity like this monster.

I haven't been to the park at all this year but a friend was kind enough to point out that there is an open spot where the baboons used to be. Considering the slightly African theme of the safari and Bizarro being an abandoned and cursed mine, an African themed drop tower giving a view over the safari area would be a thrilling (and quite lovely) addition. I just wonder about what their "record" entails.

Anybody hoping for a roller coaster should wait at least another year, not happening in 2014.

I don't see it after they spent two weeks fixing the rotwood issue to get it running again. If the issue was that bad and they wanted to get rid of it that badly, it would've been a better move to shut the ride down early and state "Preparations for 2014, wait for announcements soon!"

I can possibly see Topper Track and maybe a modernization upgrade, but closing it completely is out of the question.

Blue supports the same color as Kingda Ka's have been spotted at the park. Speculation in me has reason to believe they'll be modifying parts of the tower to hold the new hardware for the record breaking drop tower.

I'm hearing from park insiders that, sadly, it's definite. We'll see if they're right...

I wonder what they plan to do with that added space if the insiders do end up being right. RT's footprint can add some space to either Plaza Del Carnivale or Golden Kingdom. Right now I just think more attractions need to be placed in the Golden Kingdom area since the tigers and Balin's Jungleland got removed.

I'm guessing the rumors of El Toro being closed for the remainder of the season have to do with RT's removal, as the two coasters intertwine...

Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom!

World's tallest drop ride at 415 feet!

PRESS RELEASE
Aug. 29, 2013, 6:05 a.m. EDT
Six Flags Great Adventure Announces World Record-Breaking Ride for 2014
World's Largest Theme Park to Debut World's Tallest Drop Ride and Bids Farewell to a Classic Coaster

JACKSON, N.J., Aug. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- New Jersey's Six Flags Great Adventure will shatter the world record for tallest drop ride with the addition of the 41-story Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom in 2014.

Connected to the iconic Kingda Ka roller coaster--the 456-foot monster that ranks as the world's tallest coaster and fastest in North America--Zumanjaro will hoist riders 415 feet into the sky and rocket them back to Earth at 90 miles per hour while Kingda Ka trains launch right toward them at speeds of up to 128 miles per hour.

"Zumanjaro solidifies Six Flags Great Adventure's dominance as the Northeast's thrill capital," said John Fitzgerald, park president. "This is precisely the world-class, record-breaking attraction our guests have come to expect from Great Adventure. Zumanjaro is destined to top many 'must ride' lists in 2014."

Three soaring Zumanjaro towers will be built on the face of the massive Kingda Ka coaster debuting during the park's 41st season. Each drop tower will feature a gondola with eight riders.

The gondolas will rise to the top of the tower in approximately 30 seconds. Riders will pause for a few terrifying moments, 41 stories in the air--even higher than London's Big Ben and twice as high as the Statue of Liberty--allowing them to catch a glimpse of the skyscrapers in Philadelphia 52 miles to the south before gravity plunges them back to ground level in less than 10 seconds.

"Zumanjaro pushes thrills to heights never imagined when Great Adventure first opened in 1974," said park historian and author Harry Applegate. "You could stack the tallest major attractions from Great Adventure's opening season on top of one another, including the Big Wheel, Log Flume, Runaway Train and Skyride, and you would still be more than 50 feet shy of Zumanjaro."

The name "Zumanjaro" was inspired by the African influences of Safari Off Road Adventure, the attraction that combined Six Flags Great Adventure and Safari into the world's largest theme park. A newly-themed animal section adjacent to Zumanjaro will feature mischievous and playful Anubis baboons native to Africa. For nearly 40 years, these baboons were a favorite of Safari visitors, but not included in the new Safari Off Road Adventure.

"Throughout this season, guests have inquired about the baboons. We can finally announce that they will be the stars of this newly-themed area," Fitzgerald said. Guests will be able to see the lively primates, also known as olive baboons, up close in their new habitat formerly known as Safari Discoveries. These members of the Old World Monkey family "have a highly organized social structure and their interactions are fascinating to watch," he added.

Zumanjaro and the new baboon exhibit are slated for a spring debut in 2014.

The End of an Era: Rolling Thunder

The introduction of Zumanjaro spells the end of an era for one of the park's classic roller coasters, Rolling Thunder. The coaster, which opened in 1979, has delivered more than 42 million rides in its nearly 35-year history. Although the classic, dual track "woodie" remained a staple at the park, its popularity waned over the years.

"Advances in technology have led to a new generation of rides with the sleek intensity of El Toro, the world's No. 1 wooden coaster," Fitzgerald said. Guests will be able to enjoy Rolling Thunder until it closes to the public September 8, 2013 to make way for construction.

Hurricane Harbor to Expand Cabana Service with New Tiki Bar

Six Flags Hurricane Harbor will expand its first-class cabana rental service with the introduction of Cabana Cove. Cabanas offer a private escape for water park-goers, and a new tiki bar will deliver beverage service directly to the cabanas to enhance the relaxing, island-style experience.
