I have found a small treasure trove of VHS/Beta tapes of former Kings Production Broadway Style Shows from the Mid-1980's. Now, that being said, these were filmed at Carowinds NOT at Kings Dominion.

But, ALL the shows that are linked here did play at Kings Dominion at one time and the show outline is pretty much identical (music/lyrics/costumes).

I will say that the Carowinds theater, in which the Broadway-style shows ran, is smaller than the former Mason-Dixon Music Hall at KD (Now the Kings Dominion theater). The theater stage at KD is about 8-10 feet wider; about 4-6 feet greater in depth (front to back); and about 2-4 feet higher from stage floor to stage surround (proscenium arch).

Therefore, there appears to be less set pieces used in the shows at Carowinds than when the show ran at KD. I would say that Carowinds uses about 80%-85% percent of the set pieces that were used when the shows were performed at Kings Dominion.

The sets did have small differences based on where the show was performed. At Carowinds, one set piece shows their Sky Tower in the background. When the show was at Kings Dominion, it was the Eiffel Tower

Also, due to the smaller stage at Carowinds, the cast size appears to be 12 folks on average (maybe 14 in one production). Where as at KD, the cast size was 16 performers for the last 10 years of Kings Production shows (1982-1992).

In any case, I feel that the parks built from scratch, KD, KI, and Canada's Wonderland; did have the identical stage dimensions for their indoor theaters. My guess it that the other 2 parks, that Family Leisure/Taft/KECO took over, Carowinds and California's Great America, already had indoor theaters with different stage dimensions. Kings Productions simply adjusted the show sets to fit them. The major stage pieces were probably modular anyway and they dropped or added set pieces as needed.

(Example, for the "Gotta Dance" show you will see 2 light towers, one either side of the stage at Carowinds; when the show played at KD, there were 4 towers on the stage, two on either side. These tower pieces rotated during the show sets (3-sided | one side with the lights | one side with a fake brick masonry look | and the 3rd side had a dark mirror facade).

The shows are listed by the year they were performed at Carowinds. They played at Kings Dominion within 2 years of the Carowinds production dates (before or after). Keep in mind that the tapes are not HD and the film quality is not perfect; but, these are the ONLY videos that I have found of King Production shows from the mid-late 1980's. If you watched Bill's video of the Entertainment History at Kings Dominion, you will recognized the soundtrack from the show "Celebration". ;)

Enjoy!

After some random Google searching of past Kings Dominion shows, this came up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atlvGdCAQUo

This show played in the park in 1992 and apparently was the first major production taken on by Paramount as opposed to Kings Productions. Honestly, I had no idea they ever had an ice skating show. What really shocks me is the fact that this was a Paramount production. However, according to the video's description by KDFanpre91, after this show retired Paramount quickly stopped putting nearly as much effort into their shows, and sooner or later Kings Dominion was just that place with big rides and Spongebob.

Wow.

That's something a lot of people don't realize.  When *Paramount* was in charge, they really did put a lot into the park.  The problem was that it was soon followed by the purchase of Paramount by Viacom, and everything started going downhill.

I have found a few still photos of the show videos I posted above (Filmed at Carowinds | same shows performed at Kings Dominion | usually within 2 years of each other). These photos came from KD Golden Year's photo album archives.

These still photos were taken in the Mason-Dixon Music Hall at Kings Dominion. If you bothered to watch any of the videos above, you will notice that the cast in the KD photos have 16 performers compared to Carowinds cast of 12. Because the stage in the Mason-Dixon Music Hall was larger, you will see more-extra stage props/set pieces used at KD.

"Celebration"  [Played at KD 1983 | might have run in 1982 as well]

If Cedar Fair ever does form their own entertainment division (a major one), then a good name for it should be: Cedar Kings Productions.

Continuing with historic Kings production shows. Attached are videos of a show called "That's Entertainment". This was filmed in the Kings Island theater in 1981.

This is the same show that was produced at the Mason-Dixon Music Hall at Kings Dominion (KD Theater). I don't know the exact year it played at Kings Dominion maybe between 1980 and 1982. Sorry My memory is failing going that far back.

This is one of the rare shows that featured live musicians on stage in 1 or 2 sets. The singing is outstanding and everyone appears to be trained dancers in multiple disciplines.

I am surprised at the film quality; being over 32 years old. The camera does have some issues in capturing low light details. But something is better than nothing. The show is in 4 parts.

Part 1 of 4

Part 2 of 4

Part 3 of 4

I thought I would continue this thread by adding videos of Kings Production Broadway style shows that DID NOT MAKE IT TO KINGS DOMINION

These productions were featured the last couple years at Kings Island before the Paramount takeover at the end of the 1992 season. I don't know if they would have rotated to Kings Dominion eventually or not. Kings Dominion was to have gotten an Ice Skating show in 1993. It was going to be called "Hot Ice" [on a season pass flyer given out that fall to park visitors to get folks to buy next year's season passes]. I am not sure what the show content would have been; since Paramount took over in the fall and the show was re-done into "Paramount on Ice" and premiered in the newly named Paramount theater in 1993.

The 1st show was called "Superstars" and featured music from top name music stars/bands. This included Elvis, Beatles, Madonna, etc. This played at KI in 1991. Kings Dominion featured "Dancing in the City" that same year.

Sorry, for some reason when I try the imbed the YouTube link, it does not resolve. I tried the link imbed as well. No Luck. Lets see if I can just include the link in quotes [SuperStars part 1].

The 2nd show was called "Escapade" and was produced for Kings Island in 1992. This was the last Kings Production show created before the Paramount takeover at the end of that year. Kings Dominion was showing "Its Magic" that last year.

This show was more of a fantasy themed show that is similar to a couple Kings Production shows created in the mid-1980's. Its interesting in they feature quite a bit of Disney songs in it [ex. Little Mermaid].

Hi guys ! I am the caretaker for the a private collector and along with mostly vintage ringling brothers Barnum and Bailey and Hanneford circus costumes from the 50s and 60s I also have many of these costumes I am seeing here ! You might recognize them! We have multiples of the white coat dress and similar 2 piece. If anyone would like to purchase one let me know , we can let a few go if they go to enthusiasts. I’ll have a COA sent with it along with a photo of it in action. They’re $60 plus shipping for the coat dress $50 for the two piece and $50 for the furry short one piece. I can only spare about 3 from each collection. They’re in used condition but kept impeccably in a temp controlled warehouse.

ALSO - the mermaid tails are not for sale I’m sorry we are having them framed.

Shannon, its wonderful to see the original costumes for the show "Escapade" that ran at Kings Island in 1992.

But, this site is for Kings Dominion (sister park to Kings Island). This show never made it to KD for a run. Paramount took over at the end of 1992 and got rid of the Kings Production entertainment division. So, no one would know about that show here. You might have more interest from folks on a site dedicated to Kings Island.

Those are SUPER neat pieces @ShannonDawn! Huge thanks for sharing them! Given that they do seem to be from Kings Island though (thanks for the ID on them @mwhinva!), it's probably worth taking them over to KICenteal:

If you come across any other Kings Productions peices though, let us know! We love to see and try to identify this stuff!
They have kings productions in the tags guys like - sewn into them

Hi, everyone! This is a great thread! My name is Shelton and I was in the 1987 Kings Dominion cast of Fascinatin' Rhythm. I was the Track #1 male singer/dancer...the first solo was Stairway To The Stars. I have such wonderful memories. The production values were some of the best I experienced in my 15+ year career. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Welcome Shelton! Great place to catch up on the current state of Kings Dominion, with many flashbacks to the past.

I'd thought I would mention there is an unofficial Facebook group called Kings Dominion Historians. You should join the group and post this there as well. Many cast members from the Kings Dominion shows that ran in the 70's, 80's and 90's have posted there. Some have have re-connected to former cast members that they lost touch with. Who knows, you might catch up with some of the folks you performed with!

Thanks for the welcome and the tip!!

Is there somewhere that someone has created a listing of what played at the Mason/Dixon, Paramount, Kings Dominion theatre? I'd love to see somewhere an archived list of what played at the main theatre (and really at all venues) each year since the park opened
