Last night when I saw Unto Us, the crowd roared with applause when the Gloria-inspired arrangement of Away in a Manger started to play. The performance that I saw seemed to be very well received and it even got a standing ovation from about 80% of the audience, but Away in a Manger by far got the biggest reaction. It’s not the biggest production they’ve put together, but it has elements of Gloria, Believe, and even a little bit of Rejoice.

While it’s probably not my favorite show this year, I think it’s the best show in there since Miracles and it’s a fun way to relax with or without a meal.

From BGW’s site:

A choral celebration of the greatest story ever told.

The first Christmas comes alive in this inspiring new show in the open-air Il Teatro di San Marco Theatre.

I’ve said this to others and I’ll say it here:
Unto Us is the first show in Italy since Miracles that’s actually had people going out of their way to see the show. Most of the shows between Miracles and Unto Us were shows that if you happened to be eating at Marco Polo’s Marketplace and they had a showtime, you’d see it, only because you happened to be in that theater eating.

I got to see it tonight. The vocalists are excellent. BG always shines there. The playlist is a nice refresh of Gloria! The song arrangements (including mixing of songs) are beautiful.

I can only imagine how great this would be with a live orchestra. The elimination of the orchestra does leave some lacking compared to Gloria!

Like Miracles, it’s more beautiful at night

Did they cut the stage in recent years. I don’t remember the performers standing in the basement there before. It’s an odd setup.

Nothing will fully replace Miracles, but It makes sense to have a vocal show outdoors and have the dancers indoors.
They did add a dancing show this year but it’s the same old summer show that’s been playing forever……

I have watched this several times now and I will go as far to say the music arrangements are brilliant. Each one feels like a journey. Especially the 2nd act Emmanuel/Noel.

I thought the most successful songs were "Rejoice' and 'Away in a Manger' which were straight-up copies of arrangements from two previous shows. Otherwise, I thought the show was sort of boring, but I am probably comparing it to Gloria, so I'm not sure if that is fair or not.

I personally don’t think that’s fair, but that’s my opinion. I say that, though, because Gloria featured live music, but also a stage that was much more flexible in terms of what can be done (moving floors, projection screens that can be rolled, etc), whereas Unto Us is more acapella (not really, but I mean that it’s quieter), but also done in more simple way. The idea behind both is the same, but the way they were executed are opposite. They both are themed around the Nativity, but Gloria was more of a reenactment of it, Unto Us is more of a retelling of it.

This was cancelled on Wed 12/29. There was rain predicted but it didn’t come until around 8:30

But it’s again cancelled on Fri 12/31 with no rain predicted.

Cast issues?

I’ve been hearing a rumor that all shows are being cancelled this weekend. Idk if it’s true, but if it is, just a few people gonna be phased off.

Not true Celtic Fyre, Unto to Us, and Scrooge No More are canceled. From what I have heard all are Covid related. Haustop and Twas are still going on as usual. I believe several of the village preforms have temporary moved into the theaters to preform or at least that was what happened yesterday.

Today Jan 2 there were 2 of the soprano vocalists and the piano playing female lead vocalist from Onto Us singing a few songs from the show for 15 mins on the Teatro stage. That’s all that’s left. But these 3 sound amazing.

At least they could keep some of the show!
