The dishonest, anti-consumer fuckery at SeaWorld Orlando has now spread to the gift shops with @SWNeedsHelp reporting that a new 5% surcharge has been implemented for all in-park merchandise purchases. Absolutely disgusting. I can't even imagine how much worse this shit is making employees' jobs—not only do they have to deal with entitled park guests, but now they have to also fend off completely justified irritation and anger about the business they work for actively scamming consumers. Unfathomably shitty.

It would still be scummy as all get out, but I’d still feel better about this if they also bumped up the member discounts by 5% and only screwed over Gen Pop on a selfish level.
They could probably be convinced but keep in mind that there will be a 15% surcharged added to your membership purchase as a result.

Actually, who am I kidding..... you know that's the next surcharge coming anyway.

What a dumb dumb dumb move by SEAS management. I'm sure this 5% merchandise surcharge will get scaled to all other parks in the chain very soon. Thinking back to recent posts showing the price tags of shirts at BGW from certain gift shops crossed out from $19.99 to $29.99 and that's before the inevitable 5% surcharge that will likely be at BGW very soon.

Talk about nickel and dimming at the top and bottom lines here, ultimately scummy moves like this make it a lot easier for guests to lose trust in the SEAS brand.

Its things like this which will ensure I buy all SEAS merchandise years later from a seller on Ebay, haha.

This has become an enterprise where I will eat a large meal elsewhere before I come, chug a single $14 beer for maximum bodily effects, and try to avoid the other rampant examples of gouging.

Crazy times.

It's getting to the point where I'm just gonna opt for the cheapest BGW pass and only a KD platinum pass with the direction SEAS and SIX are going. It would be tough to just not go to BGW but it won't be tough to downgrade my platinum pass next year.
Some of us are in the position where downgrading from grandfathered BGW passes/memberships doesn't make sense, as it would cost the same (or more) and result in fewer benefits. That is partially driving my likely decision of going cold turkey with SEAS in 2023, focusing my spend on FUN instead, and coming back to SEAS in 2024 with a SWSA or SP Platinum membership.

If anything, I think we may see more people treating theme park memberships the same as television, where they regularly rotate services instead of subscribing to everything at the same time.

If we analyze it economically, it's clear that this "surcharge" is a tax in all but name. Of course, private corporations do not have the right to levy taxes, only governmental institutions. It is then quite clear that this is preparatory work for all Seaworld Entertainment parks to secede from the United States and form a collection of independent city-states.

Curious if the Penguin being on the sign is a way to trick people into thinking that the 5% surcharge is going to Sea Worlds animal rescue efforts.

Probably is tbh
Yeah, because while showing a pile of penguin poop would be more appropriate, it wouldn't give folks the warm and fuzzies about shelling out an additional 5%.

That said, maybe someone should make stickers of Scott Ross saying "I did that" and post them throughout the parks.

It is, sortaaa.... Going the animal department, at least at BGT, top of the line food is expensive, people would be more out raged if they cut the food quality. :/ I'm not defending them just explaining what zoological told me directly

It's just a shell game, at this point I have no interest in giving this chain any money for the foreseeable future
