Any reason in particular beyond how objectively awful it is?
It’s awful yes, the houses this year especially are really mixed

Farm 51- Campy and Fun Alien house with a facade, outdoor portion and decent set design

Waters Edge Wellness Center- Well designed and staffed house with a confusing storyline

Ultimate Gamble- Strong First Half, then becomes black walls for some reason

Atlantis- Garden Tresses

Did we go to the same event? The houses were phenomenal. I went on 9/7 and enjoyed the event equally as much as hhn the day before.
Atlantis was a fun cheesy house with LOTS of giant animatronics and sets, and a story similar to the ride.
Ultimate Gamble was good, but it did turn into a marriage and a morgue at the end. (Which isn't bad, it was still a strong marriage and morgue set)
Delirium 666 is mostly unchanged this year, except the end (after the spinning tunnel thing) is fully themed now.
Farm 51 was amazing. The giant sets, going inside and outside, and someone being abducted and launched into the air was something I've never seen at a haunt before.
Waters edge was better than most hhn houses. It was nonstop amazing scares, horrifying sets, and the music and sounds combined to make this house actually scary. This event was miles better than last years and I would *highly* recommend going.

I just saw a friend of mine who went the other night and gave the entire event a glowing review, and said it was the best one yet with great houses and scare zones. And he’s a regular HHN goer, and HOS Tampa goer. He works at Disney and knows the parks well, and I know he’d say if it was bad.

Here’s his direct quote:

“This is not my first year doing Howl O Scream at SeaWorld Orlando, however, this is by far the best year! The event is just so much fun, the scare actors are all so engaging and just having a good time. Plus the Mazes are the best this year. 👻🎃💀

I don't know what it is about this event, but it seems to be the most wildly polarizing Halloween event I've ever encountered. People I know keep telling me this year is garbage, but then I also see people coming away with the exact opposite evaluation online. Last year I kept seeing people saying it was a good event, but it was the single worst Halloween event I have ever experienced at any park literally anywhere—so much so that I refused to go back this year.

I guess the most charitable take is that it must be a super inconsistent event...?

I attended yesterday, it was my first time at SWO's Howl-O-Scream but have previously attended both BGT's version as well as Universal's HHN.

I am personally not a big horror fan, but I simply don't get the hate for this event at all. The houses felt similar in build quality and execution to BGT's event (Atlantis aside, that house is the weakest by some distance) while being lower par than Universal's offering. The event has a more laid back feel than HHN with much shorter lines, which was an incredibly pleasant experience. Acting quality was mixed to good overall.

Take my opinions with a grain of salt as I am clearly not super into these events, but I found the complaints online to be substantially overstated all things considered. If you're going in with an attitude to nitpick the event to pieces I'm sure you can do that, but for me it was a fun time. Multiple back to back night rides on Mako never hurt either.
