I was absolutely shocked by this production. I really, really enjoyed it. I went in thinking I would hate it, but was totally surprised.
I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. What I saw was a charming, well-paced telling of the original Dickens story, with songs added in to move the story along.(I think some of the songs may have been original, too?) In some places they actually took phrases verbatim, straight out of the story.
There wasn't too much emphasis on one element of the show (not too much singing, not too much dialogue). They used the projection and special effects to their advantage, and for the most part did not overuse them as London Rocks did.
What I liked most is that this show delivered exactly what it was meant to do, and didn't pretend to be something it wasn't. My biggest chagrin with London Rocks and even Monster Stomp was that they went overboard and flat out tried too hard. But Scrooge kept things simple and gave a quaint telling of the powerful Dickens classic, with musical drive. That's all it did, and I loved it.
I don't know if the last-minute overhaul of the show was the reason for its being so good and simple, or if someone knocked some sense into Scott's noggin. I hope this show is successful just to show Scott that you don't need buzzing seats, expensive puppets, and billions of flags to make a show good.
The simple, theme park-ified telling of a beloved tale is absolutely perfect for the Globe Theatre. I hope more shows at the park are done in this style, especially in the Globe.
Well done, BGW, well done.
