Defex 2.0: Definitely interesting. A shell of the original defex but a worthy successor for the modern day. My biggest complaint is that it completely disregarded what made the first Defex special. It wasn’t just a toy factory gone bad. It was a functioning factory making horrific doll creations. Think Sid from Toy Story but at factory level. The original defex was intense, loud, and in your face. I’ll also add the sets for this house ranged from amazing to flat walls with toys stapled to them. The actors did good and the costumes, masks, and makeup looked great as well. I’ll finish with saying the saving grace for this house was that it used old sets from Depths of Darkness which used old sets from the original Defex….full circle I guess.

Silver Scream Studios: Directors Cut: When I first heard whispers of an anniversary maze I didn’t believe it but here it is! Truly the biggest shock and surprise of the night. They genuinely changed this house. Each room had noticeable changes to the layout and space to accommodate for the throwbacks. I recognized all of old houses (some being extreme deep cuts to SCarowinds history). By far the highlight of the season.

Other Houses: Tooth Fairy, Paranormal Inc., and Slaughterhouse all remained good to great. Tooth Fairy had the most notable changes with maybe a little more than a third of the maze being different or redone in some way. Paranormal was noticeably brighter which was nice to appreciate the sets. Slaughterhouse remains a perfect example of a slaughterhouse style maze even if it is long in the tooth.

The Conjuring: This is great. Costumes were spectacular actors were going hard at their roles, sets were great, effects were great. Not really any notes. To nitpick I would have preferred to this be an actual house instead of the haunted house/escape room/live theater hybrid thing it is. I could easily see it becoming that in the future with little work required so I’ll hold out hope.

Glitch: Oh boy. Something had to be a bummer. This is by far the biggest waste of time and money of the year. Sure bloodyard was old but this was not the solution. The intricate and beautiful graffiti on the shipping containers has been covered up with an ugly blue paint. I see what they were going for but it fumbles hard. The costumes are good, but not enough to save the surrounding environment. I would have preferred keeping bloodyard one more year and take the time and money spent on glitch and put that into Defex 2.0.

I’ll finish by saying the merch (I actually bought several pieces), food, and atmosphere were also great. Staffing was consistent. It’s almost like the park realized this is their money maker event and decided to actually try with it for the first time in forever. Can’t wait for some repeat visits.

I think Carowinds truly exceeded expectations with this year’s SCarowinds. The event featured an impressive number of scare actors, not only within the designated scare zones but also in areas without them, such as the former Blood Yard location and the park entrance. The heavy use of fog throughout the park added to the immersive atmosphere. The Conjuring: Beyond Fear was an outstanding experience. By far the best haunted house attraction I’ve ever visited. Overall, all of the haunted houses were well executed, with standout highlights including Paranormal Inc. and Silver Scream Studios.

I thought silver scream was good till half way through then i felt like the theme got completly lost and they gave up with the movie theatre idea but idk maybe I wasn't paying enough attention. I thought they had a incredible slaughter house. It was so fucking gross and the moving mechanical stuff really made you feel like you were in some factory. It also had a really strange smell in there. Paranormal inc is visually the coolest house imo

Here’s my ranking of the houses I did last night excluding tooth fairy bc line was ridiculous
1. Slaughterhouse: GORY AF. Extremely good effects, and pretty long too
2. Paranormal Inc: super cool set. I let out the loudest scream I think I’ve ever had in my life because of one of the scares outside lol.
3. Silver scream: first maze I did. It was ok I guess. Wasn’t really a fan of the fact that it jumped from scene to scene with little to no cohesion
4. Defex 2: holy shit this thing was atrocious. First of all, I waited 45 minutes for it because of the fact that they wouldn’t let people go under Thunder strikers track when the train was going, and then I had to wait in a long line AFTER that. There were 2 pre shows. The first one looked slightly promising, but the 2nd one went off the rails. The actor girl had everyone scream “Mr pinky” to summon him, and then had us all run out of the room. Everyone was sprinting through the house and I found it hard to enjoy the scares. Seemed pretty short too.

Wow do we agree almost 100% Scarowinds was boarderline trash for the hype it gets and what it is. Slaughterhouse was super elite and crazy. Paranormal was pretty and everything else was atrocious

So I went yesterday for the first Scarowinds in probably 10 years and was shocked beyond belief with how terrible it was. We got to the park at 2 and it was insanely packed. It was actually worse than July 4th. The first thing to strike us was that Octoberfest seemed to be their main focus with booths crowding the midway. Secondly, the boo event has encroached on the rest of the park instead of focusing on one area. As the day progressed the park became overcrowded and still tons of kids. Oh but let me backup a minute. I had to park at the back gate which of course was not open. Then you get near the front of the park and a huge line to prove I was in my 50’s. Saw many people my age turned away because they didn’t have physical I’d on them. Makes no sense to Id those without kids. Then the security screening was even better with the kid yelling in my ear at people behind me because they couldn’t read his mind.

Now we were back in the park. Saw the 3 ladies singing in the gazebo. They were good, but the show moved way too slow. The lines for all rides were out of site. Even Carolina cyclone was down in the lower queues. Saw multiple food and beverage locations closed but hey Windseeker was open even though listed as the nay ride closed. Oh and Skytower closed even though not listed.

Decided to catch the 6:15 MainStage show and people stated lining up 5:15 I actually went back and got in line at 5:30. At 5:55 some guy came out and yelled that we all had to go line up at Luigi’s and they directed us in through the lower exit. Well if you are going to do that cut down on all off the ticked off guest that now ended up behind people that had just walked up. Seems like guests satisfaction has been flushed at this park.

The show was better than expected, but disjointed and with kids in the audience i heard multiple people react when oral sex was demonstrated and the girl showing her underwear in overly sexual ways. Most of the voices were good, and the bald black guy is an excellent actor, his stares would cut right through you.

Set looked very cheap as did most f the costumes but again better than expected.

Now I DID NOT pay the up charge for houses that for 24 years had been included. Only saw two scare zones that were obvious, and those were horrible. The lack of fog in the park was a huge moss and then the couple of scareactors where very cheap looking and several had on white tennis shoes and ankle socks. Something that I never saw in the past. No park signage for houses or zones and people were majorly lost. The Conjuring gift shop looked great, but not one person exiting the haunt looked happy or scared. They all looked extremely bored. Oh and by the way the first two employees to acknowledge me all day were coming in the gift shop. A security guard and emt guy. The actually were friendly and spoke. At 7 the line for Fury was posted at 90 minutes.

It was a little after 8 and we had had enough. Now for the trek back to the car by the back gate. Had to wait in a line to get it as soon as many people were leavin. Now you have to walk to the bus parking lot and then fight your way through the mess at the ID check where they were turning people away left and right. Had to walk through all of the poorly lit pot holes to get to the back gate and find my car .

Took another 20 minutes to get up and lucky I go away from 77 so I was free and happy to be headed home.

I know basically no one will be able to decide to get to a Conjuring: Beyond Fear based on this recommendation this late in the season, but I'm making the recommendation anyway.

I drove all the way out to Carowinds today specifically for this experience and, frankly, I'm glad I did. I've been to a lot of park haunts now, but I've never seen something like that before. Wholly unique, excellently executed experience. It's the closest to true, real, honest-to-god immersive theater I've ever seen at a park. An experience like this would be right at home as a stand-alone theatrical experience in any number of major cities. The fact that it has been installed at four random amusement parks is almost criminally short-selling what Six Flags has on their hands here.

It's not perfect—there are things I would change and fix—but damn, what a cool fucking experience.

I'll probably write more extensively about SCarowinds at some point soon, but for now, I had to rave about Beyond Fear.
