Theme parks are cool

Alright so I’ll preface this with, I started listening to this podcast called “Streaming Things” when they were doing The Last of Us on HBO. Today Spotify pulled them up and they apparently did an episode on Class Action Park the documentary.

During the podcast they made claims like “the only thing between your life and death on a roller coaster is a stoned out of his mind apathetic teenager” and yeah this made me furious. I’ve heard similar rhetoric from people in my day to day. One of my bosses at my old job when we were going to BGW for our work event was making asinine claims like “some high kid is going to press a button releasing the restraints killing all of us.” Despite the fact he has an employee who knows more about theme parks in general than him he couldn’t give a sh*t less what I said about the fact what he was describing wasn’t possible. The other frequent claim I hear is just fear of absolutely bonkers scenarios like people getting “stuck upside down on roller coasters” despite that obviously not being how they work. They mentioned Kings Island quite a lot since they appeared to be locals and “stoned teenager” is an extremely rude way to describe those ride ops. Kings Island probably has some of the best ride operators I’ve ever seen. At least they did when I visited in June 2022 which honestly contributed a bit more to my general frustration.

I mean like come on average people there is LITERALLY a hill with a chain lift that everyone calls “the lift” you would think would think if somebody used logic they might catch on that the ride is operated by gravity. This also frustrates me when people ask if a ride goes upside down when there’s a loop, corkscrew, zero-G roll in front of their eye balls.

I will literally explain this to certain people making these claims and they HOLD that ignorance hard.

Like I get it in society, theme parks aren’t important in the grand scheme of life. I just can’t stand such blatant ignorance of an obvious application of math and science using advanced technology instead of just assuming it’s like some carny contraption that routinely kills people operated by a drug addict. I find claims about the park employees all being “stoned teenagers” rude and extremely disrespectful to all these people who work hard to make these places fun enjoyable and safe.

Sorry I’m done ranting. Anyone else feel me on this stuff though? I mean honestly this is probably how “enthusiasts” of numerous other passion hobbies feel about everyone’s deep ignorance of their hobby. I just worry the ignorance in our situation could one day become toxic enough to where it gets into powerful ears and they move to take action on pure ignorance. Probably long odds on that but who knows honestly.

Given all the other issues that we've seen a certain subset of this nation double-down in their ignorance of reality and/or any grounded understanding of scientific principles, this really doesn't surprise me at all.

Otherwise, if they didn't happen IRL, I'd just think such claims are made-up thoosies-bait on r/rollercoasterjerk
