RE: Project 2016

Hokie305: It's a bit off-topic but I wanted to thank you for the mockups. I know they're not the easiest things to throw together- I appreciate the time and effort you've been putting in.

I've been looking at site plans and blueprints for years and years now and I'd like to think I'm fairly good at visualizing how everything will end up looking. That said, each mock-up you've posted has triggered me to look or think about the site just slightly differently than I had been previously and they've actually been a huge help.

Anyway, all that said, thanks a ton and keep it up!

For what it is worth, I grew up in Virginia Beach and went to both BGW and KD.  I now live in Northern Virginia and I have seen KD marketing up here.

I believe if you look through the old Caro threads, I believe you will find extensive discussions about Charlotte actively reaching out to Cedar Fair, offering marketing money.  I am pretty sure that is why they got Fury and became the new southeast flagship.

You beat me to it, I live in Northern VA as well and I see KD advertising all the time on TV. I rarely see Busch Gardens advertised.

RE: Project 2016

Here are my predictions for the next five years:

2016: S&S Screamin' Swing/Frisbee/Enterprise, Slingshot, Candy Apple grove upgrade, food upgrade (similar to Carowinds)

2017: Launched wingrider named "Valravn"* in the spot behind Rebel Yell/Intimidator 305, new park entrance, possible removal of Dinosaurs Alive

2018: Theming Improvements, closure of Action Theater

2019: TrioTech dark ride in former Action Theater/Dinos alive

2020: More family additions, more waterpark additions

I think this is pretty reasonable.

RE: Project 2016

Well Knott's Berry Farm and Kings Island announced their 2016 additions today to kickoff the Cedar Fair announcements. Cedar Point's was planned for yesterday, but delayed due to the death last week. I'd expect ours to be soon.

Knott's Berry: GhostRider will close on September 8 for a comprehensive restoration to begin Ghost Town's 75th Anniversary. Screamin’ Swing will also permanently close on September 8 in preparation for Ghost Town’s 75th anniversary celebration in 2016. Later details will be announced in November for what else is new for Ghost Town.

Kings Island: Tropical Plunge, an exact replica of our Hurricane Heights tower, WOF's, Dorney's, and soon-to-be Carowinds'. These are popping up everywhere! Although I must say I believe it has been a great success in our Soak City.

What intrigues me about today's announcements is Knott's removing their Screamin' Swing. As I said in a few posts above, it seems like KD's proposed ride will swing from side to side or have a larger footprint higher off the ground. Could the Knott's Screamin' Swing be coming here? It appears the footprint of the ride is a little smaller than what's proposed here, but currently it is in a circle concrete pad (which is rare) as it reused an existing space so the footprint will change if it is indeed relocated.

I should add that Knott's Screamin' Swing is an up charge attraction as it only hold 8 people per cycle (2 arms, 4 riders per arm).

RE: Project 2016

I hope KD does not get Knott's Screamin' Swing. They are not very reliable. We rode Dollywood's last season and it had a higher capacity than what you've described.

RE: Project 2016

I'd love a Screamin' Swing as they are one of my favorite flats, but a higher capacity, non-upcharge one. Dollywood's is great as it is holds 32 riders per cycle and has some theming.

Also, it's official, tomorrow!

EDIT: Joe beat me to it!

RE: Project 2016

Well, it would have to be an up-charge attraction for Kings Dominion. 8 rider capacity per cycle?!?! Heck, even Cedar Fair's smallest park, Michigan's Adventure, would have to keep this ride an up-charge. Could not imagine the line for this ride if it was free!

Supposedly, Knott's version was the S & S prototype. I looked at the S & S Sansai web site and they do not currently offer this small size. The current capacities are 16 | 32 | 40 person varieties. Cedar Point's version is the 40 person capacity (20 seats on each of the 2 arms with 10 seats back to back on each side of the arm).

I would guess KD could get either the 32 or 40 person version. What is nice, from an operational viewpoint, is that you can run just one arm if the park attendance is light. With a ride like the drop tower the whole ride carriage has to go up even if you are only loading 2 of the 4 quadrants on light attendance days.

Keep in mind that Cedar Fair stated most of the parks in the chain were going to lose an existing attraction to make way for future stuff. This year, Carowinds Thunder Road is gone; Kings Dominion's Shockwave is up for sale and it appears the park will start taking it down after labor day; now, Knott's is getting rid of their Screaming Swing.

I would not read too much into this removal of Screaming Swing at Knott's as being a transfer to KD. At least not yet. :-X

RE: Project 2016

I have a bad feeling it will be one of those silly spinning disko coaster things. A larger version of Lucy's Tugboat in planet snoopy.

RE: Project 2016

Who knows what we will end up with.

I thought it was funny that Kings Island kept giving folks the idea that something was going to happen to the Racer with photos of the ride on Facebook and Twitter; when giving info for the upcoming 2016 announcement. Some were getting anxious that the Racer was possibly going to have the same fate as Thunder Road! Only to find out 2016 just involves the water park and parking entrance!

I am pretty sure the park plans, revealed by Zachary, for 2016 in Candy Apple Grove are not misleading. Just no detail on the specifics for the new 2016 stuff. Whether or not there is any additional stuff coming in addition to what Zachary was shown, remains to be seen.

If this attraction is the size of a major thrill ride, then it will be all we are getting ride wise. Major flats run from 10-12 million on the low end to 12-14 million on the high end. This should be enough for the park to advertise as the main 2016 attraction. Just like Drop Tower and Wind-Seeker were when they first opened.

Any info on whether or not there will be a live 'in park' announcement Joe?

RE: Project 2016

I wish I knew.

From the way it's worded on Facebook, it looks like it will just be an online announcement. This makes sense since the past two seasons the park has not done an "in park" announcement.

But my guess is as good as any, so who knows. I'll be at the park tomorrow anyway, should something come up.

RE: Project 2016

Considering they gave us a time of day, "Tune in tomorrow morning," and said nothing about a press conference(KI and CP announced before hand that they were having one in the park), some in-park event regarding this announcement is extremely doubtful IMO. I think we can just expect them to do a social media and media release tomorrow morning, like they said in the post.

RE: Project 2016

I feel bad for the poor souls on KD's Instagram picture who are speculating about a coaster. Grab some breakfast with a side of disappointment for tomorrow's announcement!

You're right. It is kind of sad. There's one guy on the FB page replying to every comment who seems mad at the world because there will be no coaster.

RE: Project 2016

I was looking at the comments on the release for the Soak City expansion last year, and even then there were disappointments that it wasn't a coaster. And the hopeful ones were betting that 2016 would definitely be the year for a new coaster. I understand they all sound vein for just caring about a new coaster, and not all the good things that these recent renovations are bringing to the park. But unfortunately, KD has a lot of fans who think that way, even still. I just wish the park could always please both ends of the spectrum. Even though, if the park was putting in a new coaster we would still probably see the infrastructural improvements to the surrounding area that we are getting this year without one....
