Per public records I've reviewed, Merlin/LEGOLAND California has recently been in talks with the City of Carlsbad, California regarding the potential addition of a Peppa Pig Theme Park to the larger LEGOLAND California resort property. Per discussions between LEGOLAND and Carlsbad representatives, this new Peppa Pig theme park would be located in what is currently the LEGOLAND parking lot along Palomar Airport Road.
According to an internal Carlsbad, CA memo from April 2023, detailed plans had not yet been submitted to the city for this project as of that time. That said, the memo did state that discussions and meetings with LEGOLAND representatives about this proposal had continued throughout 2022 and that, as of April 2023, the city's understanding was that Merlin/LEGOLAND was still working on preparing their full application for this new Peppa Pig project.
According to that memo, if/when final plans are submitted to Carlsbad, the city estimates that the approval process could take between 12 and 18 months. Furthermore, because of the scale of the addition and the fact that the property is within the prevue of the California Coastal Commission, any plans would also need to clear their permitting process as well—something that, per Carlsbad, could take another 18 months.
From what I can tell on the public record as of now, Merlin still has yet to formally submit a full proposal for a potential Peppa Pig theme park to the city. I do not know whether additional meetings have taken place with LEGOLAND regarding this project since April of 2023 either. Maybe that’s something some local journalists can dig up?
With the estimated timelines provided by Carlsbad in mind, even if LEGOLAND were to submit full plans for a Peppa Pig theme park in Carlsbad tomorrow, we’d still be looking at a good handful of years before such a park could realistically open to the public.
Though the information here is pretty dated, there may be good reason to believe that this project is still moving forward. A large parking garage project—likely to allow for the reallocation of existing parking lots to a Peppa Pig Theme Park as described above—is actively moving forward now.
