Haunted Houses
13: Your Number's Up (Location: Europe in the Air)
“For 13 long years, the dark tower was locked away from the world—existing only in the nightmares of those who had dared to experience Howl-O-Scream’s first and most terrifying maze. But now the seal has been broken. The tower is open once more and on the 13th floor, your darkest phobias and fears lurk in the shadows. Are you brave enough to face them or is your number up?”
Bitten (Location: Drachen Fire Station)
“Suspicion, darkness and mind-numbing fear surround the “Bitten” house which is set in Eastern Europe in the late 1800s. Full of legends and lore of vampires and the undead that preyed on the innocent, this manor sits by the road upon which all travelers must pass but few return.”
Catacomb (Location: Royal Palace Theater Backstage Areas)
“Through a ruined cemetery filled with statues lies a tunnel that leads to an underground city. Its history is more terrifying than that of France’s worst revolutions. Deep within these tunnels lie mile after mile of bones—the final resting place for those who are buried here. But all is not as quiet as it appears. As guests venture forth into the dank, dripping corridors of rat-infested remains, the voices of the dead begin to speak, and some have taken shape.”
Cut Throat Cove (Location: Festa Italia located between Trade Wind and Roman Rapids)
“Heed the warning: Abandon hope all ye who enter. Cut Throat Cove™ is the haven for bloodthirsty, dangerous rogues – where the scurvy dogs, buccaneers and scoundrels go for shelter. Proceed with caution. Alas, something has gone terribly wrong. Within this macabre market, the pirates have been slaughtered and mutiny is afoot. The way out lies with the buried treasure and the blood-curdling screams you hear just might be your own.”
Deadline (Location: Underneath Escape from Pompeii)
“Deep underground, construction of the newest line of the Pompeii Metro was moving smoothly until an ancient pipe was accidentally struck. At first, it seemed like steam. Then the mist became thicker, more sinister. Now the strange gas is leaking quickly, and everyone trapped inside is infected. The difficult decision was made to cut off all communication to the outside world. The Dead Line is off the grid.”
Root of all Evil (Location: Germany Employee Parking Lot)
“The seeds of evil have been sown. Venture if you dare into a decrepit greenhouse. Experiments here have not gone as planned and evil has taken control. Botanists, landscapers and staff all poisoned by the very plants they created. In this maze of foliage, you are ripe for the pickings.”
Terror-Tories
Demon Street (Location: France)
“Paris is burning. Can you escape before the city is engulfed in flame? Let the smoldering ruins light your way, but beware, fiery fiends lurk around every corner ready to put you on the coals. The smell of a burning inferno fills the air and rumor has it unsuspecting souls will be roasted on a spit. It’s about to get very hot in Paris, so stay cool or you may find yourself going up in smoke.”
Ports of Skull (Location: Italy)
“The Jolly Roger has risen over a ship graveyard filled with lost souls doomed to haunt the vessels they once sailed. Chart your course through Cut Throat Cove™ or cozy up to the Pirate Baarrrgh™ for a swill ‘o the grog, but keep a weather eye open or you may find yourself keel-hauled by cut-throat buccaneers.”
Ripper Row (Location: England)
“Things are looking a bit unsettling in England with a murderer on the loose plucking unsuspecting victims from the city streets to satisfy his grizzly curiosity. No one knows what Jack the Ripper looks like or who he will strike next. Authorities hunt furiously among the crowds in search of the killer nabbing anyone who looks at all suspicious. Keep your head down and your wits about you or you might not make it out alive.”
Vampire Point (Location: Germany)
“Even vampires need a vacation once in a while and Vampire Point® is the perfect destination for bloodsuckers. Watch your step and your neck or you might end up the main course at the Blood Banquet™. Dawn is hours away, so your last salvation lies in escaping the vampire village before the inhabitants sink their fangs into you.”
Wendigo Woods (Location: New France)
“Wendigo Woods™ started out as a state-of-the-art facility where researchers could study the flora and fauna of the northern reaches of the continent’s forests. The camp was named after a terrifying creature, the Wendigo, which was thought to be only a legend … until now. Sightings of mysterious creatures stalking through the woods have prompted a security team to shut down the compound and contain whatever is out there. Either unravel the mystery of Wendigo Woods or fall prey to the terror in the trees.”
Shows
Fiends (Location: Abbeystone Theatre)
“The wacky doctor and his manic nurses are creating the ultimate Fiend, and there’s not a bad seat in the lab. The voltage is high, and so is the fun as they sing, dance and bring you along on the operation of a lifetime.”
Monster Stomp on Ripper Row (Location: Globe Theatre)
“Monster Stomp returns, this time on Ripper Row. This modern rock and rhythm spectacular features Jack the Ripper like you’ve never seen him before. The beat is back as electrifying percussion, dynamic dance, and sensational singing return to the stage in a pulse pounding revue that is darkly entertaining.”
Night Beats (Location: Das Festhaus)
“Things that go bump in the night sing, dance and transport you on a musical journey. From the devilish sounds of the roaring '20s to vamping it up with the music of today, this show is filled with dazzling dance numbers, sizzling singers and a barely live band that will leave your heart … beating.”

Scare Zones
Widow Makers (Location: New France)
“Venture deep into the woods of New France, where a solitary logging camp is ensnared by a killer clan of enormous venomous spiders. The loggers are fighting back with their sharpest blades, but these angry arachnids are bent on destruction—and they’re ready to capture anyone who wanders into their wicked web of terror. So watch your step. If you’re not careful, you could be tangled forever in the spiders’ deadly trap.”
Grin and Scare It (Location: Festa Italia Entry Bridge)
“Go ahead. Step right up to the creepiest show on earth. A traveling carnival has just crawled into Festa Italia, and you’ll be one of the very first guests to see what terrible traps these carnies have in store. As they unpack boxes brimming with ghastly tricks, the high-pitched laughter of evil clowns echo from the shadows. At this sinister circus, you won’t be calling for an encore.
Unleashed (Location: Jack Hanna's Wild Reserve)
"The full moon looms. The fog creeps closer. And somewhere in the distance, a creature howls. There are werewolves on the prowl, and they’re coming nearer—hunting for unsuspecting human prey. So listen for the rustle of dry leaves in the bushes, and beware the creepy cry that pierces the darkness. It may be your only warning in this scare zone, where you’ll discover what happens when true fear is Unleashed."
Stitchin' Time (Location: Germany)
"This is the realm of the living dead—a land where zombies and monsters roam and where cold eyes search for unsuspecting new victims. Could you become one of them? In the darkened streets of Germany a demonic doctor is on the loose, frantically gathering the limbs and organs of the living. His purpose: to patch together a new breed of immortal creatures and to build a ferocious force of undead to do his bidding. He’s armed his zombie militia with scissors, needles and thread, and he’s convinced them all it’s Stitchin’ Time. And now, they’re dying to make you a part of their evil empire."
Scavengers (Location: Scotland)

Now man has invaded their home, once again opening a doorway into their “Cavern of Darkness” with the explorations of the earth’s crust. And the creatures of the Underside will lie still no more. Having already lost what is above, they will not lose what is below. They didn’t choose to live in the Underside, but it is their home – and those that venture below, will never again see the light of day.

Masquerage (Location Roman Rapids Queue)
Welcome to the Masquerage... Rsvp if you dare. Only the brave have survived this nightmarish journey through a ruined Italian palace where grand galas were once thrown. Under the guise of a masquerade party, a dark deed took place here, and many were horribly imprisoned and tortured. For centuries, beings known only as Cloakwalkers have haunted these ruins, searching for new victims to perform their danse macabre. Turn upon turn leads you further into the house, and deeper into the crypts that spell your doom.
Curse of Pompeii (Location: Underneath Escape from Pompeii) 4 Pumpkins
The maze beneath Escape from Pompeii takes guests on an expedition through an archaeological excavation. In search of ancient treasure, guests explore the ruins of Pompeii to unearth a Roman Emperor’s mask. Traps, man-eating plants, and rumbling earthquakes await all foolish enough to search for the cursed mask.
Wicked Woods:Ripper Row (Festa Italia Field)
Wicked Woods, a maze shrouded in gory history and mystery. This portal-in-time transports visitors to a remote English village where gruesome scenes of history such as the Great Fire of London, the rampage of Jack the Ripper and the bubonic plague are played out. Some call it a myth or even local folklore, but one thing is for sure: There will be more than autumn leaves falling out of the trees in Wicked Woods - New this year will be the addition of a evil Sweeney Todd Barber in the section we are calling Ripper Row.
Grimm Hollows: Deadtime Stories (Location: Drachen Fire Station) 5 Pumpkins
For years, stories have been told about the house and the strange happenings that occur there. Known to have been the birthplace of the Brother’s Grimm, this house reveals the darkest stories of the brother’s lives – not the fairy stories that we as children heard, but rather the truths behind those tales. Be prepared to face the most primal of your childhood fears – Happy endings were the things of fairy tales. In this house, bedtime is a thing to fear.
Tormented Tales (Location: Drachen Fire Maintenance Bay) 5 Pumpkins
The Fairy tale stories that we have known and loved have horribly changed. Through the pages of a giant book, you enter into their nightmare where endings are everything but happy. Nothing is as it should be – Characters have left their pages and are wandering amongst our guests – Only this time, the story will likely end with your demise.
Scarezones
Werewolf Reserve (Location: Jack Hanna's Wild Reserve)
It's not just the wind that's howling in Jack Hanna's Wild Reserve. There's a full moon every Howl-O-Scream evening as werewolves roam the reserve.
Piratical Purgatory (Location: England)

Never After (Location: Festhaus Park)
Once upon a time is no more –If you enter this dark realm, things will not be as they seem. Paths lead you on a nightmarish trip from things based in reality – to things that become unspeakable. Extreme frights await all who enter – what you thought was real is all a fairy tale. As the twilight beckons, the agony begins.
The Beaten Path (Location: Festhaus Park/Festhaus Field)
The Path is a journey that few have undertaken – and fewer still survived. It is a road that leads to nowhere and everywhere – with something in between that is best left forgotten. Buildings change as you continue on the path – foreboding signs that you need to turn around before its too late. Once you journey too far, however, there is no chance of escape – this nightmare has become your new reality. And you must see it through to the end.

Honestly, I can not find any evidence supporting the Transylvania Express during the first year and I believe VP of Ent. said when Howl-o-Scream first started it was two houses and one show. It was very basic. The train I believe, came later one when Jack was introduced. If you were looking at trademarks, perhaps Transylvania Express was a Tampa thing or it was one of those trademarks that was only created to confuse competitors and us.

I remember going to the first Howl O Scream and I am 99.9% positive the Haunted Train was not there yet.

I was decently young (maybe 10 or 11) so I don't remember a whole lot beyond seeing some show in the Festhaus and receiving a HUGE bag of candy as part of some kid's costume contest they were doing. My mom was an employee at that point so the candy part may have been part of some employee thing and not an actual consumer activity though.

Here is a newspaper article from October 15th 1999.....
WILLIAMSBURG — AFTER DARK, IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT PARK.

Night falls on Busch Gardens Theme park turns itself into a haunted house

Getting an early start on Halloween, Busch Gardens unveils its new "Howl-O-Scream" look today. When the sun is up, the park won't look a whole lot different. But when dusk begins to settle over Apollo's Chariot, the entire park will become infested by ghosts and goblins, witches and werewolves.

The new attractions include the Dark Tower, a haunted maze located in the Hastings section of the park; the Transylvania Express, a spooky train ride; and a variety of Halloween-related children's activities in the Land of Dragons section.

The new attractions will be running through the end of the month.

To take advantage of the after-dark atmosphere, the park has extended its hours of operation on Fridays and Saturdays. Instead of closing at 7, it will remain open until 10 p.m. on those days.

"It's a pretty major transformation of the entire park," director of operations Steve Carr says. "We think it's enhancing the park, rather than changing it entirely.

Because the bulk of the transformation takes place at night, our guests can still enjoy the more typical Busch Gardens experience throughout the day if that's what they prefer - and at night they have the option of enjoying some of the Halloween atmosphere as well."

Carr is particularly proud of the Transylvania Express, an 8-minute train ride around the grounds. It includes spooky stories, atmospheric fog and lighting, and some interactive meetings with unfriendly spirits.

"You're going to be seeing some activities and action all around the train ride," he says. "Hopefully it will take some memories you have, some ideas you have about Halloween, and allow you to see them acted out on some portions of the ride. It will make you gasp and jump a little."

Elsewhere in the park, the Dark Tower maze will put a seasonal spin on the traditional carnival funhouse.

"You'll be going up and down a narrow hallway in the dark," Carr says, "and there will be some spooky things that might make you start and jump. You'll think some things are there that really aren't there."

He said the Dark Tower might be too scary for young children, and for that reason the park is also offering some "friendlier ghosts and goblins" in the Land of Dragons - where kids will be able to go trick-or-treating, get their faces painted, decorate pumpkins and watch special Halloween shows.

The Howl-O-Scream additions were all created by the staff at Busch Gardens, a process that took almost a full year to plan and execute.

In recent years, the park has simply put up Halloween decorations and put some people in costumes, but Carr said this year's production is a much more elaborate project.

Guess I was wrong! Though now that I think about it more, I may be remembering something from 1998 or 1997 before it was actually 'Howl O Scream'.

10th Anniversary blurbs. (Edit to add the rest).

Masquerage: RSVP if You Dare - Welcome to the Masquerage - R.S.V.P. if you dare. For centuries, beings known only as Cloakwalkers have haunted these ruins, searching for new victims to perform their Danse Macabre. Grimm Hollows: Deadtime Stories - The first of a set of three mazes, collectively called "The Never After", this maze takes place in a haunted house that is meant to resemble a horrified version of the one The Brothers Grimm grew up in. It features Undead Servants, Pig Men, and Werewolves for the majority of the attraction.

Tormented Tales - (The follow up maze to "Grimm Hollows: Deadtime Stories) In this second maze we follow the path the Grimm Brothers took and are lead through a house that condensates all of their experiences with fairy tale creatures into one main maze. This includes Hansel and Gretle, The Three Little Pigs, and Rapunzel and Prince Charming. This Maze is the second in "The Never After" maze series it is followed by The Beaten Path.

This Scare Zone also features a long cue line for entrance into the first maze in which ghouls and tormented souls from all three mazes will attempt to drag you back into their home for good!

The Beaten Path - The Path is a journey that few have undertaken – and fewer still survived. It is a road that leads to nowhere and everywhere – with something in between that is best left forgotten. I don't remember it personally, but the Fright Lights Laser Show was there in 2003. Not sure about the clown themed tea cups.

Anybody remember the Laser Light Show?:) (It's a toughie.) My parents thought I was going crazy but I found a video. Also, how about the clown crazy tea cups?
I remember both of those things. Mostly because the laser light show, the only time I remember watching it, it was raining. So the rain made the lights even cooler. (being wet however watching the show was not as fun.)

And the clown tea cups was a very fun way of redecorating a ride for the theme. It had black curtains to enclose the ride, it had black light paint polka dots on the inside. They removed the teapot and replaced it with a clown hanging upside down. I never rode it, because I was having the worst panic attacks being in Festa due to clowns. And teacups and I don't get along. But I'm pretty sure it was also black lit (to go along with the dots.)

I'd love if they could bring that back, I don't think it'd be incredibly costly to do so.

I have it digitized. I will have to see if it can be uploaded. I just finished watching the star fright orchestra. Now watching scare search. Will probably need to break it down into smaller clips of individual shows before uploading. 2 hours seems like a lot to upload at once.
