Camp Wilderness Resort Renovations

It looks like the park itself isn't the only place receiving some love during the off-season. Kings Dominion's campground, Camp Wilderness, will be closed until late Spring to early Summer for "exciting renovations."

It looks like not much information has been released at this point, but it sounds like they will be releasing more information later in the off-season. I would expect to see them renovate things like the bathrooms, general store, and maybe the pool and playground.

Hmmm...

Wow! I just wrote this morning, on ChickenKing's thread under "Everything Else", about Cedar Fair wanting to renovate the Kings Dominion campground 4-5 years ago; but, was not in a financial position to do so. Looks like they are finally getting around to doing the renovation. Hope they finish before CK's trip. Be nice to enjoy a freshly renovated campground! :)

RE: Camp Wilderness Resort Renovations

Yup, I originally posted this in CK's thread before moving it to the News section. Funny, I didn't even see this until the same day you posted. :p

I just saw a small news scoop, on KDFanSite, about the 2014 Upgrade/Renovation to Kings Dominion's Camp Wilderness campground.

According to the article, they are planning on adding 32 cabins to the campground with the potential to add 20 more cabins in the future. The article has the survey layout/map of the campground and where the new cabins will be located. There is another area on the map that states reserved for future cabins; but, that has been X'ed out and "Not Now" written next to it.

There is a cabin layout/elevation document that shows what the cabins look like. That document states Cedar Point's "Lighthouse Point" campground. I assume the new cabins for Cedar Point and Kings Dominion are identical, so they are using the same document.

The existing RV sites are to be renovated. They have a future expansion area for more RV sites; but, it has been X'ed out and written next to it "Not Now".

The common facilities at the campground, (registration building, camp store, shower house(s), pool area, etc.), are supposed to be renovated as well.

Check it out if you are interested. (I left this in the Rumor forum as this is not official yet from Kings Dominion / Cedar Fair).

We are very excited about our multi-million dollar campground expansion, which will include new deluxe cabins and lots of exciting upgrades. Expect more details and photos in the coming weeks!

From Kings Dominion's Facebook page. I guess this means the improvements here are indeed major changes, not just little fix-ups here and there. Hopefully we'll get to see some photos soon!

I'm interested in renting a couple of those deluxe cabins for a wild night or two of debauchery.

Has anyone heard when the campground will reopen? I called a couple of weeks ago about a cabin and was told they would open 'sometime in June.' The women had a skeptical tone, or of course I could just be misinterpreting. In any case, I stopped by there last weekend and was surprised to find that the whole campground is still closed.

I've camped there several times before but always at the group sites. I was surprised to read tripadvisor reports of loud train noise, although looking at the park map tells me why. Maybe the noise was just incidental to that my Girl Scout troop was creating.

The King's Dominion site acts as if you can book online but I get error 403: Forbidden Access error. In any case, I've called them multiple times and left messages. Once I got them on the line and they said camping sites with no electricity/water were 29.99 and sites with the amenities were 36.99 per night. They were unwilling or unable to give me a price on the cabins.

The best I can tell you is that it will open sometime in June. Since all of the cabins are built and on- site, I'm sure they're still working out all of the pricing... Which whoever answers the phone doesn't know.

I plugged some numbers into the reservations checker, and the campground's average rates are as follows:

- Deluxe Cabins - $174.99 per night

- RV Campsites - $60 per night [average]

- Tent sites [with electric/water hookups] - $46.99

- Primitive tent sites [no hookups] - $41.99

In addition to the info above, discounted park admission and access to all campsite amenities is included with your stay. The swimming pool follows the WaterWorks seasonal operating schedule. Also, don't forget that pass members receive a 10% discount on their stay at the campground.

The cabins do seem pretty expensive, but you do get a lot:

For a one-night stay, that's not too shabby. I just might have to check this out for myself this summer.

That seems pretty cheap, the cottages at Cedar Point are much smaller and cost that much before Memorial Day, with a discount. I wonder how much the price will vary throughout the year, assuming that it does.
