Just saw on r/rollercoasters that Magic Mountain has filed for the removal of their 78 year old kiddie coaster Magic Flyer. According to RCDB it will close some time in December

My guess is they'll probably run this through the end of Holiday in the Park (January 4th), then shut it and the adjacent Tweety's Escape (also being removed) down for good. No big loss to be honest as its an old, old ride that barely gets any ridership and has been redundant for over twenty years. I suspect the plan is to install a couple family flats here to complement the new coaster, especially with the empty Sierra Twist plot (now Pistachio Park) just across the walkway.

As expected, the Reddit post’s comments are nothing short of comical and unreasonable. Never seen people make such a big stink about something nobody over the age of like 8 can even ride.

Sure, it’s a shame to see a nearly 80 year old coaster go, but of all the coasters at that age or older, this has to be the absolute most inconsequential removal possible.

Comments from the park spokesperson:

“Six Flags Magic Mountain has been creating family memories for more than five decades. We understand that saying goodbye to beloved rides can be difficult, but this change is part of a much larger plan to enhance the guest experience for families,” a park spokesperson said in a statement.

“We look forward to sharing the exciting details soon,” the spokesperson said.

I can't help but wonder if the removal of 4 different pieces of ride hardware is a cost-cutting measure long-term... but at the same time, you wouldn't think a 2014 Zamperla kiddie credit is massively higher-maintenance...

Guessing this is either going to another park in the chain, or just an overall reduction in rides/staffing budgets to blame here. Could wind up at another park - SFOG, SF St Louis, or WOF (if they wanted to replace their Wacky Worm).

E&F Miler's cost like $3 to run and maintain, they are ridiculously basic pieces of hardware that have aged well and could survive a nuclear apocalypse. And that ride has a lot of foliage around it.

Hot Rod Racers is a Zamperla Gravity Coaster, which I point out only because those coasters have not been aging well. It also a little uglier than the other and sits on open concrete with a few props and little greenery, up against a midway. They could have rethemed to make it fit better but the space seemed more appealing for playgrounds that will probably look alot nicer and reduce the operating budget a bit. A busy play structure also offers kids a much-needed space to unwind and honestly could be higher capacity in a way.

Yeah, they be cleaning house with the area and like all of you I'd assume each ride got evaluated by the following criteria; Can it fit into a retheme? Is the hardware still sound? Is ridership where it should be? How does it fit into our current lineup? Is there something better that can replace it?
