This post got me thinking about how I would retheme my home park Six Flags Great America. So I took some time today and wrote up what I would do. It might be a little sloppy because I've never tried doing something like this before, but here's what I did:If I have time, I'd love to make comprehensive retheming plans for every Six Flags park. I think cohesion=immersion. Even if the theming isn't Disney or even Herschend level, at least having some consistent and unique themes in these parks would go a long way.
I've color coded each of the lands that I've created concepts for.
Red: Carousel Plaza
Blue: Orleans Place
Green: DC Harbor
Orange: Looney Tunes Territory OR Camp Snoopy (Depending on what IP Six Flags has available)
Purple: County Fair
Teal: Demon Dominion
White: Southwest Territory
Yellow: Hometown Square
Carousel Plaza
No real changes will be made to the rides in this section, everything here (Carousel, Maxx Force, Sky Tower) are pretty theme agnostic and this section of the park, being at the front, just has the job of being pretty. After my recent trip to CGA, I’ve noticed that Gurnee’s plaza looks a bit more rundown and not as pretty. I’d appreciate more flora and also repainting/refreshes of the stores. There’s also some random Looney Tunes figures around here as well, I like them but I think they’d belong better in one of the areas I’ll discuss later.
Orleans Place
There are several changes I’d like to make to Orleans Place. The first big change is the reintegration of the “Mardi Gras” area into Orleans Place. There can still be a light Mardi Gras theme to this area (Mardi Gras is a big part of New Orleans, after all), but having two similarly themed areas in the park never really made sense to me, so I’m putting them back together into one land.Several rides in this part of the park fit pretty nicely, so their theming can stay. I like Rue Le Dodge, Big Easy Balloons, and Condor for this area even if Condor’s name doesn’t fit 100% (it fits way better during Fright Fest when they name it Birds of the Bayou though). Roaring Rapids is fine enough, although giving it a sort of Bayou retheme and name change would be the most ideal.
Superman and Dark Knight are the two that need rethemes, in my opinion. It’s a shame because Dark Knight is actually a pretty well themed ride in and of itself, but it doesn’t really fit here. There’s a few options I see for it, like removing the building or even removing the ride altogether, but my favorite idea is this: they could retheme the inside of the building to a wacky Mardi Gras theme. They could even bring back the Ragin’ Cajun name if they wanted for this. I started writing this idea as a potential idea for it but I liked it better than the rest of the alternatives so that’s what I’m going with.
Superman also needs a retheme. They could also just close this ride, but it’s still very popular so I don’t think that should be a real option for them. I researched birds that are common in the Orleans area, and it’s fairly common to see Bald Eagles in this area of the country, but we already have an Eagle ride in this park that I have no intention on changing, so the next bird that caught my eye was the Heron (a yellow crowned night heron, to be specific). I would change the coaster’s name to Heron, paint the main part of the track brown, but keep the rails yellow, and I think you’d have a pretty cool looking coaster.
In terms of new rides, I think this area would be a great place to add a Zamperla Endeavor and name it “Orleans Orbit” after the old Enterprise that used to be in this area. The spot is currently used only for a Fright Fest haunt, I believe, and this could be used for some nostalgia while also adding rides here while not removing much. There’s definitely room for one or two more flats here, especially since Mardi Gras Hangover and Ragin’ Cajun have yet to be replaced by anything, but I don’t want to do too many ride additions in this, this is mostly just how I’d retheme the park if I could.
DC Harbor
In a perfect world, I’d remove the DC theming from the whole park, but Batman’s theme is too iconic at this point to remove honestly, especially since it was the first one. So instead, I’m removing the DC Universe name (it’s very lazy in my opinion) and bringing back the Harbor theme, since the area is still surrounded by water, while keeping the main DC theming in place. Not much really has to change about the rest of the area, honestly though I’m selfish and I’m going to remove the Aquaman theming from Yankee Clipper and just theme it back to Yankee Clipper. Aquaman’s theming is so lazy and I think Yankee Clipper would still fit the harbor theme even if it stands out from the rest of the DC themed rides.Looney Tunes Territory OR Camp Snoopy
The kids area. I’ll keep the outdoorsy style theming here of Yukon Territory but add either Looney Tunes or Snoopy, depending on which IP Six Flags wants to go with. If I had a choice, I would go with Snoopy, but I’m going to operate on the assumption that Six Flags wants to keep Looney Tunes in the park, so I’ll be theming the rides here as such. All of the Looney Tunes statues from the front of the park will be moved here. In addition, the ones from the go karts will also be spread out around this area of the park too.
The Go-Karts are gone. They needed to leave the park, like, five years ago if we’re being honest. Logger’s Run and Little Dipper can stay as is, although I wouldn’t be opposed to them adding Looney Tunes animatronics to Logger’s Run (huge long shot). Camp Cartoon is being reintegrated into this area and Sprocket Rockets is staying, although will be rethemed. Crazy Bus and Yahoo River either need to be rethemed or removed, you can pick or choose to be honest.
For new rides in this area, I’d really like to see a HUSS Breakdance here. CGA’s Camp Snoopy has one here and it fits very nicely. The rides from Kidzopolis that still have a lot of their expected service life remaining can also be moved here (spoiler alert for that section of the park). Also a flying scooters would be awesome here as well
County Fair
This area will be largely unchanged, minus a few (large) caveats. While I love CGA’s County Fair and it’s NorCal theming, I’m not really sure how I’d translate that area over to Illinois, so I’m keeping the theming mostly the same. I am now however cutting the border for this area off at X-Flight, though. This area is way too big (both here and at CGA, it’s almost half the park!). However, I’m also axing Kidzopolis and reintegrating that area into County Fair, as there’s already a new large kids area in the park.Fiddler’s Fling, American Eagle, and Sky Striker are staying the same. X-Flight can stay the same too, but theming it after an airshow instead of “going on a top secret mission” I think would fit the Fair theme better. Honestly unsure of how I’d theme Goliath, I feel like the theme definitely needs to change but at this point I’m unsure of how. Maybe I’ll edit this if I get a better idea.
The old Kidzopolis area should have one or two moderately thrilling flats. CGA’s County Fair has a Zamperla Windstar here, and that would be a great addition here.
Demon Dominion
A new area of the park, not much here needs to be really changed. This area goes from Lobster to Wrath of Rakshasa, stopping before X-Flight. This area is themed to the demons, since both Rakshasa and Demon are both already themed to demons. I also like Lobster for this area, maybe going back to its previous name, The East River Crawler, to fit with the theme a little better. I think giving the area a spooky vibe would be perfect for this area and not much really needs to be added to it.Southwest Territory
This area of the park is already the best themed in the park so I’m looking at the one part of it that sticks out like a sore thumb: Justice League. I actually really like this ride but if this is my proposal, it’s getting rethemed into a Wild West dark ride.Like I said earlier though, not much else needs to be done with this area. It’s the one area of the park where every ride (besides the one listed above) fits the theme incredibly so there’s not much else to do with it.
Hometown Square
Perfect. No notes. Just clean up the buildings a bit.
