I read an article in the WY Daily that Chowning's Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg has reopened with a new menu http://wydaily.com/2014/04/27/chownings-tavern-re-launches-with-new-ale-house-atmosphere/.  See the new menu here http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/~/media/Files/cw/menus/chownings/chowning-all-day.ashx and beverage menu here http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/~/media/Files/cw/menus/chownings/chowning-bev.ashx

For people who may not have ever attended the gambols at this establishment, here are some details.  Gambols begins at 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.  You arrive at the restaurant, put your name on the list and they call you inside when a table is ready.  I would recommend arriving a bit before 9.  There is a possibility they will seat you with strangers if your party does not fill up a table, but we're all adept in Festhaus-style seating, right?  There is a one drink minimum; children are allowed, and an abbreviated appetizer menu is served along with the full beverage menu.  Free baskets of peanuts are on the table.  The web-site does not say what time it closes but it was around 11 each time I attended on weeknights.  You do not need a ticket to visit CW taverns.

Shortly after 9 the entertainment begins; I've been several times and it varied.  There are often three different entertainment groups and they rotate through the rooms.  I've been serenaded by musicians playing period instruments, encouraged to join in singing period sea chanties, been told colonial jokes, completed puzzles and watched a magician.  It's the kind of charming experience that I've not had elsewhere and is well worth the price of the beverage(s).
