CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On Monday officials from Cedar Fair, the company that owns Carowinds announced a $50 million investment in the amusement park.

At the Charlotte Chamber Board of Advisers meeting, Cedar Fair said it plans to add new rides and attractions on land, on the North Carolina side of the park in Charlotte as well as more concessions and games.

They said it will make Carowinds the fourth-largest park that they own.

This park needed love like we need air, glad to see Cedar Fair making this kind of investment over the next few years.

With this $50 million investment (actually closer to $43 million but that's semantics) will come a $30 million coaster during their three year expansion plan.

From Charlotte Business Journal:
We also learn from the Charlotte City Council agenda that Cedar Fair is planning a new roller coaster as a part of the expansion. The plan is to build Carowinds attendance to 2.5 million a year, up from the current 1.9 million at the park.

RE: Cedar Fair announces $50M investment in Carowinds

Rumors are that CF has stated that the $30 million dollar coaster will be a new 300-footer. It'd be fantastic to see another giga added to the world. It'll be interesting to see if the rumors are true, would they go with B&M or Intamin?

RE: Cedar Fair announces $50M investment in Carowinds

Cedar Fair apparently has sworn away from Intamin due to the issues with i305 and Shoot the Rapids (not the recent ones, btw). If it is a Giga it is very likely it will be B&M.

RE: Cedar Fair announces $50M investment in Carowinds

I've heard the same, but Leviathan at CW didn't seem to open to the same laudations as Intamin's gigas. I'd rather see a B&M anyway.

RE: Cedar Fair announces $50M investment in Carowinds

I feel like Leviathan is sorta like AC since it was its first Giga. They will take what they know and add onto that.

RE: Cedar Fair announces $50M investment in Carowinds

Leviathan is an interesting one, I had the pleasure of riding it in September. (Which reminds me, I still have my Canadian trip report to write for you all) The ride is a SPEED monster, many people were confused as to why it was added right after a B&M hyper but the two rides are totally different. The only things they have in common are their manufacturer and the clam shell restraints. Its the equivalent to BGW adding Alpengeist and then Apollo. Anyway, the ride is all about speed and you really really feel it, its well executed up until the break run. My only gripe with Leviathan is that it should have been longer. The ride doesn't have a MCBR and both times I rode it mentally I thought the final break run was the MCBR. The ride has SOO much speed and it carries that speed all the way to the end. It could have continued past the station and done a second "Out and Back." My hope is that Caro does get a B&M Giga and that B&M learns from Leviathan and builds a better longer Giga.

RE: Cedar Fair announces $50M investment in Carowinds

I believe the main gripe with Leviathan's really misplaced brake run is that the ride was literally built on top of Dragon Fire. Due to the location of where the station was I guess it was in B&M's best intentions to end the ride 120 feet high and have a slope almost a football field long into the station.

I believe B&M can get away with using magnets to slow the train into an actual brake run, much like what Intamin, Mack, and Zierer have done with their recent additions. Since Carowinds hopefully will not have the obstacle issues (unless CF is dumb and wants the brake run over a parking lot), I can be hopeful that B&M will use a better method of slowing down/stopping the train.

Leviathan reportedly ran out of budget and so became the length it was. B&M has been guilty in the past, though, of building large rides that end far too soon with lots of kinetic energy to spare (looking at you, Griffon).

Hurler is getting a refit. A redesign from the curve after the first drop in order to "...improve the shaping of the new curve to help with maintenance and rider experience."

That's fantastic news. Good on Carowinds for keeping some of their older woodies rideable.

For those that care, the Xtreme Skyflyer was moved from behind Hurler to the area between WindSeeker, Reptar (I mean Flying Ace Aerial Chase) and Nighthawk. Of course, more of the old Carolina Sternwheeler water paid the price. You can see it if you squint at the WindSeeker Webcam.

RE: $50M investment in Carowinds (New Coaster)

Plans have been found showing that Carowinds will be redoing their entrance plaza. So far the plans only show what's going on in South Carolina, but they do show supports and a tunnel.

These plans show that the entrance lanes will be clipped and that the ride will pass close to the new entrance lanes, and go through a tunnel and turn around before coming back across North Carolina. What the ride will be doing in North Carolina and besides that tunnel I do not know.
