If it is a non-profit organization, don't their books have to have a zero balance at the end of the year?

I thought that, depending on legal classification, most non-profits can operate similar to a regular business - the difference is that they couldn't keep their earnings as profits.

This doesn't sound familiar (possibly because I'm not a local and I also have a terrible sense of direction). What street is this on? I need to plan for next time because by around 3:00 p.m. I'm usually hot, tired, and in need of caffeine.
