With BGT announcing the sudden closure of scorpion, it got me thinking about operating coaster counts year by year at each park. Other than the early years, both parks have been either even in the amount of coasters operating or Tampa has won out by having 1 or more coasters operating in a single season.
Just recently with the opening of DarKoaster, the number of operating coasters was brought back even with 10 each. With project 2025 eminent, 2025 will see BGW operating 11 coaster in a single season. With the closure of Scorpion and no eminent replacement, that would put BGT at 9 coaster operating in a single season for the 2025 season.
That got me thinking. How long has it been since BGW had a multiple coaster lead on BGT? I decided to figure it out and it’s been a lot longer than I thought. BGW last operated at least 2 more coaster in one season than BGT is 1984. That season, BGW operated Loch Ness, Big Bad Wolf, Glissade, and Das Kätzchen. BGT operated Python and Scorpion. At the end of the 1984 season, BGW would remove Das Kätzchen leaving BGW with 3 operating coasters. At the end of the 1985 season BGW would remove Glissade bringing the number of operating coaster count in 1986 down to 2. BGW would lead by 1 again in 92, 97, and 98 and never leading since. Tampa gained the lead in 04 and never looked back.
For the first time since 1984, BGW will hold a 2 coaster advantage on BGT. With what we currently know about future projects, BGW probably won’t hold the 2 coaster lead for more than a season or two, but barring some kind of coaster removal from BGW that comes completely out of nowhere, BGW should hold at least a 1 coaster lead for the foreseeable future. I know that this means almost nothing in the grand scheme of things, but I just thought that it was kind of neat with the whole sibling rivalry that the two parks have always shared.
