I have heard that busch installed metal detectors at the front gate. I have not personally verified this yet.

It's a good move, other parks have been going that route and provided they don't have a completely screwed up security check system like Six Flags Great Adventure it shouldn't have a major impact on the entry experience.
Now I wonder if they're permanent-appearance (ala GAdv) or temporary (ala Dorney and KD).

I am not entirely sure this are going to stop anyone who wants to do harm. The fact is there have to be plenty of ways to get a weapon into the park if it is desired. From my perspective they are not going to do much more than slow things down. Frankly dogs would be far more useful as they can identify explosives and lets be honest a domestic terrorist who wants to make a stand in an amusement park is not likely going to use a hand gun.

1. They are a deterrent. Obviously, they won’t stop determined criminals, but they likely will scare off others.
2. They give guests a sense of increased security. Valid or not, people will feel as if the park is safer and actively protecting them.
3. They are useful for lawsuits. If they don’t have them, victims can say they didn’t take reasonable, industry-standard precautions.

Universal Orlando and WDW have metal detectors. At Uni, everyone goes through them either entering from a resort (at the resort) or before entering via a walking path to the restricted area that includes Citywalk. At WDW they hand inspect bags, and send some percentage of guests through metal detectors.
At Hersheypark, there are not metal detectors at the park entrance (the new entrance gate will). All other entertainment venues of HE&R have metal detectors for all events, including the Hershey Theatre. The golf course does not, the resort hotels do not, the restaurants do not.
Knoebels has nothing of the sort.
Building fear does not require explosives or even dozens of fatalities. A handgun in Festhaus for example, with two or three magazines, would create complete chaos. Our local Renaissance Faire prohibits firearms, even for conceal carry permit holders, but they hire armed guards for every event.
The appearance of security/safety is a challenge for those that have been exposed to training for events, or are otherwise conscious of the ne’er do wells.
Any chance they’ll make it faster? Maybe eliminate the need to poke around in guests’ bags with sticks? Or with their hands, as I experienced last trip. The guy doing the inspection actually reached in and started pulling things out of my bag. I don’t know for sure, but I’d think doing that is against the rules (hence the sticks).
The sticks aren't a privacy thing. They are to keep the guards safe, since something could knick them in the bag, whatever that may be. If they choose to be more thorough by using their hands, that's on them. Ultimately you consent to people seeing your personal belongings by entering the park.
Yeah, it was a fairly painless process. I came in around 6:45pm so things might have been different that late, but we didn't have to remove anything from our pockets like at Kings Dominion. I had keys on a caribiner clip on my belt loop and just walked right through without triggering it. It was slower, but definitely not bad.

Very little chance of that. As far as removing it usually they will ask you do take it out if they want it out of the bag but it's well within their rights to take it out.
As some who works customer service should they ever be yelled at? Well of course not. That said the park is busy under staffed and pretty much everyone working won't have a paycheck after tonight patients are thin someone is going to snap as long as it's just verbal and not explicit give over it. Trust me you don't want to know how many times I wanted to tell a customer to shut up over the Christmas holidays at my job.
Yep walked through with s bunch of stuff that set of KDs all the time. That actually concerns me. How much are they catching and how likely is something that should be caught getting through. From a liability prospective setting them up but not running them effectively is more of a liability then not having them.
It sounds like the detectors don't have their sensitivity set that high which is most likely why it didn't pick up your metal items. When I purchased one for my office a few years ago (prices go from $1200 up to $10K) a tech came out with metal "samples" that he used to set the sensitivity on the machine to how we wanted it. So making it not pick up the small stuff, but will get something larger like a gun or other weapon, will make not that much slower, hopefully,, to get in.
