The dog was found in a vehicle in the France parking lot, police say

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly leaving a young dog locked in a car with all the windows closed at Busch Gardens.

A James City County Police officer at Busch Gardens was notified by a bystander around 4:45 p.m. Monday about a dog that was locked in a vehicle in the France parking lot, police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams said.

The officer responded to the car and saw a young pit bull in distress in the vehicle. The car was locked and all the windows were closed, Williams said.

As police worked to locate the owner of the car and dog, the officer used a door-opening tool to get the dog out of the vehicle.

When the 17-year-old owner arrived at the car, he confronted the officer, Williams said. The owner then tried to walk away, at which point the officer attempted to take him into custody.

The teenager then turned around to hit the officer and the two got into a scuffle as the officer tried again to take the teenager into custody, Williams said.

The teenager was taken into custody and sustained minor injuries from the altercation, police said. The officer also sustained minor injuries.

The teenager was taken to the Merrimac Detention Center and charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, animal cruelty and possession of marijuana.

The dog was picked up by animal control, Williams said.

“Monday afternoon, Busch Gardens was notified about a dog that was left in an unattended guest vehicle,” park spokeswoman Cindy Sarko said. “James City Country Police was notified and arrived on property immediately. The officers safely removed the dog from the car. Further questions regarding the situation should be directed to James City County Police.”

Update: This story has been updated with a statement from Busch Gardens.

My sources not park related but VERY familiar with the situation say that he was not only carrying pot but using it. My understanding is that can tend to make people make bad decisions. Also it's possible that if the dog was in the back seat or something that BGW staff were not aware of it when directing him to park and since he didn't pay for the kennel or the parking just directed him regularly unaware of the situation.

An animal rights activist group is encouraging Busch Gardens Williamsburg to start posting hot car warning signs in its parking lots after a dog was rescued from a locked car earlier this week.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Kevin Lembke, the park’s president, on Friday urging Busch Gardens to post signs warning of the dangers of leaving children and pets inside hot vehicles.
In a news release, PETA said the letter was prompted by an incident on Monday at Busch Gardens in which a 17-year-old was charged with animal cruelty after a passer-by noticed a pit bull in distress inside a locked car.

According to PETA, 33 children, 41 dogs and one kitten have died in hot cars in 2018.
“In light of this nearly fatal accident, we urge Busch Gardens to post signs in parking lots warning guests of the dangers of leaving children and animals inside hot cars,” the letter reads.
The letter asks Busch Gardens to join other groups that have put hot car warning signs on their properties, including Simon Property Group, which owns Williamsburg Premium Outlets; GGP, and Macerich.
“A parked car can be a death trap for children and dogs who can’t escape as temperatures soar and their bodies shut down,” said Tracy Reiman, PETA executive vice president. “PETA is calling on Busch Gardens to do its part to help prevent anyone from enduring a horrific heatstroke death on its premises.”
Busch Gardens declined to comment for this story.

PETA really doesn't have any right to talk about animal safety. Even if you were to ignore the high rates of animals killed in their shelters, they still steal pets and put them down on a regular basis.

The park shouldn't engage at all with PETA as they should not be given legitimacy.

Being that Lembke is new I highly doubt he will ignore the signage recommendation. Signs will most likely be up soon.

Also I think this is the first time I've ever seen @Pretzel Kaiser say something non-sarcastic

I really don't want to see signs go up saying not to do that. I rather see signs promoting the kennel more.

On top of that, if I were someone up there with the SEAS, I would ask PETA for documentation of them doing the same for every single parking lot, grocery store, park. and neighborhood that this same exact thing.

NO, PETA is a horrible organization that needs to be left alone.

I'm a very challenge them to do the same to everyone and maybe we'll comply type person.

Because in my mind, if they don't, coming after BGW for this, and Blackwater; it's boarder line harassment.

As much as I dislike PETA, this isn't exactly something to get worked up over. The cost to put up signs is minor, and would be better than dealing with any sort of stunt PETA may pull if they didn't.

They can also be the type that you give an inch and they can try to take a mile.
