It didn't appear that the Stingray addressed the Dutchman's core loading issues. I have to wonder if B&M has some tight patents on their loading system preventing Vekoma from inverting the station.

The patent issue was what I was wondering about-I mean, if I were B&M, I wouldn't want another company using a system similar to mine. Vekoma's Stingray design looks nice to me, maybe not as quick loading as the B&M fliers, but nice. The only fliers I have been on are Manta and Nighthawk, but I loved both (preferred Manta, but I'm quite sure part of that was the theming...). I would love more fliers in general, lol.

So, dumb question here...assuming the restraint system and other engineering of the train design were different from B&M's, could Vekoma invert the station without treading on B&M's patents? (or, is there no way to know that, really?)

Some one that is more technically savy and has experience reading patents could very well go to the patent database and pull what ever B&M has and make that determination, but I know I not skilled enough to interpret those. If you are curious here is the patent number that can be looked up on the Patent Database: 7,204,559

Oddly enough Disney hold two patents for flying roller coasters as well...

So here are some odd patent's out there for flying coasters.

Vekoma's 8,453,576 is really weird and cites reasons that it is better than B&M's 7,204,559.

You'll have to look up the patent numbers on the patent database to see the full break down. My link above only has the illustrations, there is no way to link to the actual patent page.

Where? Behind the rabbit?

I actually prefer the way Vekoma puts you into flying position, it's very thrilling and sudden.

To address Vekomas loading system, however:

Quote:The Flying Dutchman will be delivered with a complete new train design and this second generation of our Flying dutchman contains all features and design philosophies of the first generation, however with implemented major improvements of the restraint system, tilting device and ride control.

Interestingly, the design for the Vekoma Flying Dutchman seems to have been altered, featuring what appears to be a Pretzel Loop. Click the link above and look directly to the right where you will see it's B&M inspired'ish' like design.

I'm now imagining a pretzel loop a la Manta's and a vertical loop a la Nighthawk's on the same ride. That would be epic...

Thanks for the patent numbers! I didn't realize a patent was that wordy, lol. I'll have to reread them several times, I think.

The loading for the Vekoma flyer was supposed to be far quicker. The idea was that you would sit down upright in the station, facing backwards, like you currently do. However, the train was supposed to leave the station in this position, and then tilt back while going up the lift hill. Same thing returning, the train was supposed to tilt back upright while coming through the brake run back into the station. They never could get this to work, so the raising and lowering was done in the station. (BTW, not fun for media day, when you're laying back with your feet above your head while each reporter does their bit. Repeatedly. Massive headache after a while!) Haven't ridden Carowinds' since it was relocated to the park (it's been down every time I went!) but I understand that they removed the on-board tilting mechanism in favor of a mechanical solution in the station. From the description of the second gen trains on Vekoma's website, however, it sounds like they think they have the on-board solution finally figured out.

I kinda mentioned this before but the restraints and trains are a little more than weird on patent 8453576. It actually looks terrifying. I don't know that I would be comfortable in that "seat."
