The California Coastal Commission has announced that seaworld san diego can no longer breed its killer whales or transport them. I will say, it is definitely a bad day for seaworld:-(

From what I understand, this was one condition of allowing the huge new Orca habitat there. I'm curious about the details and if it will actually have a long term affect on SW as a whole.

While it may take years for the orcas to die off, it doesn't make ANY sense economically to invest millions of dollars into a habitat.

I have a feeling this stipulation will be overruled though, as legally the CCC cannot implement these restrictions; due to natural breeding.

Also, as far as transport goes, what if San Diego is in danger or if any natural disaster strikes that area? Those whales are better off being transported than dying.

It just dumbfounds me how people think so shallow-minded and don't look at the big picture, only bits & pieces.

I have serious doubts based on what I have read that they actually have the powered to do theses things. I see this likely to be overturned.

I even received a letter about that, and yet I didn't really read much into it. I thought "Oh, a California hearing. I guess that hardly applies to me." I am truly appalled by this. I almost think that SeaWorld is better off not being around a place where such short-sighted legislature could/would be passed. (No offense to anyone living there. Rather, my deepest sympathies.)

I would rather have them transport the Orcas to a new facility (new SeaWorld?) if possible, and not have them die off slowly, until they have to euthanize the last one due to new legislation.

I believe if they have the actual power to stop the breeding, they could not do the blue world project in san diego and continue to breed the whales. Then they could do the expansion at another seaworld.(preferably orlando)

They have simular plan in the pipe line for both other parks. San Diego was chosen as the first one as because they have been taking more heat then the other parks.

The Aquarium tried that once. PETA made life hell for the VB City Counsel. This was back in the 90's. Since 20 years later there is now an enormous dolphin habitat the sized of 4 football fields on General Booth, Blvd clearly PETA had no influence....

I couldn't quickly find a link to a legit web site with this story, but SW is taking the planning commission to court, say if they have no legal authority to ban breeding.
