So, something weird has happened at KD this week. And I'm not sure I like it.

The vast majority of the Boardwalk Fries stands in the park have been removed. In their place is a new stand called "Island Twist" selling frozen sweets.

The stands feature predominately pineapple-and-soft serve concoctions, including one similar to the famous "Dole Whip" at Disney's Magic Kingdom.

All but two former Boardwalk Fries stands that I have seen have turned into "Island Twist" stands. The stands in Soak City and International Street (both of which were larger facilities) still sell the fries. I have not yet gotten a status on the stand near Avalanche.

Most bizarrely, the former Theatre Snacks restaurant in Old Virginia has been transformed into a new Boardwalk Fries location.

I'm sorely confused by this move. First off, Theater Snacks was on all three dining plans. For them to remove an option from the dining plan two months after many people already paid for it, seems kind of slimy. (It should be noted that Theater Snacks has already been removed from the park's website and dining plan listings, but it is still on the park map.)

Secondly, the stand looks terrible. Sure, it might look fine if it were in the middle of Candy Apple Grove, but the tacky bright blue sticks out like a sore thumb in Old Virginia. Even more so when the building it replaced had a wood-carved sign and a tan-and-red color scheme.

Overall, I'm confused and a little saddened by this change. First, I don't like sweets that much, and ice cream (especially when covered with sugary pineapple) sounds like a treat far too decadent to eat regularly at the park. Fries, on the other hand, are much better "munching foods," a snack in the middle of the day rather than a dessert to splurge on. I guess I'll just have to go to one of the three remaining locations now.

Perhaps, though, the park made this change for the same reason I am upset. Maybe fewer people buy fries from stands as they would a sweet treat like ice cream. All of the current Boardwalk Fries locations are in larger facilities than the smaller stands that were replaced. Maybe the Fries are best handled in these larger locations?

Shrug.

I for one love pineapple soft serve.

The food stand they converted, was that the one that they introduced the new BBQ to this season? Because that would be a disappointment.

Frankly this may have been boardwalk fries doing. They may have found that they were not pulling enough sales to justify all the stands.

The fry stand in Soak City is busy as all get out all the time!

Where? Behind the rabbit?

Nope. The stand in the photo is the one across from the "vine" Tunnel in Old VA. The new BBQ place is between the KD Theater and the log flume.

Hard to say what the reasons are for the reduction in the Fry booths. It could be that the franchise, along with the park, decided to make some changes (consolidation). On the other hand, Boardwalk fries did take over what was once an "in-house" food stand. So, I would not be worried too much that Board Walk Fries is on its way out.

Plus, the Dole Pineapple whip is very popular in Disney parks and other park chains across the country.

I thought Chef Paul said the food service department was going to be more proactive this season to try new things out and make changes to existing locations/menus during the year. I assume this means tweaking existing food items, dropping items that are not popular, and adding new menu items to get a sense of what park visitors want. I don't think it is such a bad thing and I kind of like this more proactive approach.

Well, if they gave KD clientele what they wanted to eat, KD would only serve roadkill on a stick and KFC.

I am personally thrilled to have Dole Whip at KD. It is fantastic.

And, Joe, it is NOT "ice cream covered in sugary pineapple." It is more like pineapple frozen yogurt.

I believe Chef Paul told us at the Soak City media event that the Boardwalk Fries in the water park area was leaving.

Hopefully, we can now use credit cards to get Boardwalk Fries? That will be a nice change, as well.

Personally I'm happy with this change. It seemed like the park was filled with Boardwalk fries and now with 3 or 4 locations in the park it isn't overwhelming. Even with these locations fans of the park's Boardwalk fries (including myself) have a max walk of 3-5 mins to get to a stand.

I suspect that the Dole pineapple is from his time in Hawaii. Chef Paul was stationed there and we have already seen him bring Hawaiian items to the park, the Malasadas come to mind. While yes I am aware the Dole Ice Cream is at Disney I am not convinced that is why it is here. Chef Paul does not seem to do things because they are done anywhere else.

For the record the Dole Plantation has all kinds of yummy pineapple stuff, if you can get past the whole near-enslavement-of-native-peoples thing. Everytime I go to Hawaii I go there for the ice cream and the pound cake. Also the train ride is nice.
